1943 Detroit White Riot

On that hot June night, Belle Island was packed, traffic congested at the ferry docks with the pleasure-seekers struggling to get home. On the bridge leading back to the mainland, 200 African Americans fought a crowd of white sailors. Imagine the screams, the blood on the concrete. Meanwhile, on the other side at the mainland entrance, angry whites waited for the black vacationers' to cross. A veritable lynch mob, 5,000 strong. By midnight, there was widespread rioting. It lasted for three days. President Roosevelt ordered 6,000 federal troops into the city to stop the violence and looting. The troops occupied the city for six months.

The body count: 25 black residents, 9 white. Of those 25 black residents, 17 died at the hands of white policemen. The number of injured, including police officers, was close to 700. Property damage added up to $2 million.
