Art of War, if you are relying on the other school to bring people to your games you have no fan base.  Don't confuse attendance with a fan base.

Excellent point (you and Jafus). I agree in terms of FAMU joining the SWAC; as Drumma1 correctly stated, attendance would go up immediately but not necessarily the fanBASE. I think all HBCUs have this problem to a degree, some worse than others. We (NSU) are one of the worst. We'll do 15-20k for Hampton or A&T but 6500 for DSU. This means our fanBASE is really 6500!

However in contrast, right now the crowd at FAMU's football games are overwhelmingly orange & green. Both sides of the stadium quite literally are the "home" side. I would bet money they have the smallest ratio of visiting fans in the MEAC, yet they routinely lead the conference, or usually end up in the top 3 or so. Very rarely less than 10k fans no matter the opponent. As HBCUs go, they have a helluva fan base. We could all do better though.

I wonder what the attendance numbers will be when we visit norfolk this upcoming season. If I'm not mistaken we haven't been to norfolk for football for quite some time.

FAMU has a tremendous fan base for a school its size.   You look at other schools in the 1AA division and their attendance.  FAMU does well.  We lack as HBCUs corporate sponsorships and advertising money.  We get the least as always from a public not associated with that type school.  Butts in the seats are not the problem but peripheral funding .

I think the MEAC distributed over $1 million to conf members during the 12/13 FY.

Also, is there evidence that an NCAA conference and a former member agreed to an installment plan for the exit fee?

It is a common practice between BCS FBS Division I programs as well as Division I (I-AAA) basketball conferences. I will search for some links to articles that I have read over the years. They last ones to come to mind were between the ACC members making payments to the Big East Conference and another was the SEC expansion members of Texas A&M and Missouri making payments to the Big XII Conference over several years.

You have to find a way to get those numbers up when DSU comes to town.  One suggestion would be to invite the Navy to the game.  If you give them tickets they will spend lost of money on concessions.  Make that money any way you can.
