???...............uhhhh, surprised that no one has raised this topic yet.

What did you guys think?  Did you like it, not like it, couldn't give a rat's a.z.z , WHAT?  She was the first operatic/classical singer invited to sing the NA at the Super Bowl, so really want to know what y'all think about it.  ;)

..............yeah, just commented on one of the SB threads on the sports page that I didn't tune in until 5pm, CST.  So I started watching about 25mins before you did.  The Fox broadcast of last nite's game began at 11:00AM, CST, i.e., over SIX HOURS of broadcast time preceding the kickoff!?!?!?!?! :o

Btw, because I DID tune in earlier than you, and you didn't see Fleming sing the NA, I wonder if you have either seen or heard that a few minutes before Fleming, Queen Latifah was on singing America the Beautiful with around six sistahs backing her up. As for Latifah's performance.............. :o :(.

Even Ms. Strike grimaced and commented on why is Latifah always invited to "sing" something when she is in fact a RAPPER.

It wasn't Whitney Houston, but I think she did a GREAT job!   She sounds fantastic!

I wasn't aware that Dana Elaine could sing so well.

I applaud Queen Latifah's performance of America The Beautiful. She did not scream it! It was smooth and classy.

.............yeah, THIS^^^^^^is a fair statement, imho.

Did a little research...........Houston was not quite 28 years old when she sang the NA at the 1991 Superbowl.  Fleming will be 55 in less than two weeks.  So that means Fleming is damn near twice Houston's age when Houston sanged it.  Does that make a difference?  Answer: Yes.

Houston was probably not quite at her peak when she sang the NA.  The woman was just a BRILLIANT pop and gospel vocalist, right up there in Barbara Streisand territory.  That's one of the things that made her death so tragic, just an INCREDIBLE singing voice.

Fleming has been in the business for some, what, 30 years or so.  I think female opera/classical singers reach their peak in mid-late 40's, and the voice declines after that.  But Fleming, like MANY great operatic/classical singers, has done the things she NEEDS to do to "preserve" her voice well into her 50's.  She is STILL performing concert and opera.

What is rather interesting for THIS poster is that my family and I saw Fleming perform last fall, I believe it was in September/October, with the Nashville Symphony at the local symphony hall.  And I commented about it on this board and mentioned that I was getting college football updates texted to me during the concert.  And so here I am AGAIN commenting on Fleming in a football context.

I've been a fan of hers for years, have several recordings, and have seen numerous videos of hers on youtube.  That was a great concert, but the voice was SLIGHTLY down from where it was, say, around ten years ago when NO ONE could touch her.

Anyway, nothing is impossible, but its gonna be a LONG time before someone is able to match Houston at a public performance of the NA.  But Fleming's rendition last nite WAS beautiful.  ;)

I saw it. It was fine. But, I really don't care for the national anthem before sporting events. Or the reading of the Declaration of Independence.

???..........dude, I was informed for the VERY FIRST TIME this morning that Fox had folks reading the Dec of Independence on yesterday's broadcast.  It was mentioned in a thread on the politics page on this forum that this had been done, and I have asked if someone would please explain the CONTEXT in which this was done as I don't get it.  If you or anyone else can explain the RATIONALE for Fox having the Dec of Independence read prior to the Superbowl, I would appreciate it.

As for the national anthem, your humble poster doesn't necessarily have a problem with that being sung before sporting events, but there are MANY people who agree with you on that, Mr. Devin.  ;)

I don't know the context. The DOI was read before the Green Bay-Pittsburgh Super Bowl in Dallas three years ago, also a game televised by FOX.  The NFL really pushes military, conservativism and nationalism on ya. They go hard on the proproganda .

I watched Bubba Watson upchuck the Waste Management Phoenix Open, then had dinner, then went into the basement to watch the game….
