Former George W. Bush Adviser: Chris Christie 'Could Actually Benefit' From Bridge Scandal
The Huffington Post  |  By Chris Gentilviso
Posted: 01/10/2014 9:28 am EST  |  Updated: 01/10/2014 3:35 pm EST

In the eyes of one former George W. Bush aide, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) could stand to profit from the George Washington Bridge traffic troubles.

In a Friday interview with ABC's "Good Morning America," Matthew Dowd expressed his belief that Christie's "contrite" and "humble" tone in Thursday's apology demonstrated his skill at dismissing the scandal in a swift fashion. Dowd served as chief strategist for the victorious 2004 Bush reelection campaign.

THIS GRAPHIC IS YOUR RESPONSE?  YOU CAN NOT WRITE A SIMPLE SENTENCE, IN YOUR OWN WORDS?  YOU SIMPLY POST A GRAPHIC OF SOMEONE ELSES, CHARACTERIZATION?  :lmao: SO TYPICAL OF YOU.  POST SOMEONE ELSE'S COMMENTS,  DO NOT OFFER YOUR OWN OPINION AND FINALLY DEFELECT FROM THE TOPIC AT HAND.  THIS POST IS ABOUT WHAT THE GOVENOR OF NEW JERSEY KNEW, WHEN HE KNEW IT AND DID HE COMIT A CRIMINAL ACT.

IF THIS LITTLE "TRAFFIC JAM" PROVES TO BE A DOCUMENTED  ABUSE OF THE PUBLIC TRUST FOR POLITICAL RETRIBUTION AND THE GOVERNOR OF NEW JERSEY IS FOUND TO BE A LIAR, HIS FAT a**  IS TOAST.

AT THIS POINT I WILL SIMPLY RESERVE JUDGEMENT ON HIM UNTIL ALL THE E-MAILS HAVE BEEN UN REDACTED, AND READ.

WASHINGTON -- The New Jersey state Assembly is stepping up its investigation into "Bridgegate," announcing Monday that it has created a special investigatory committee to focus on the issue.

The committee, which will have subpoena power and a special counsel, will be led by Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D), who also chairs the chamber's transportation committee. Wisniewski has been leading the effort to figure out why New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's (R) administration closed access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, N.J., in September.

"The evidence that has come out in recent weeks makes clear that this now goes above and beyond a transportation issue and goes into the highest ranks of the executive branch," Wisniewski said in a statement Monday. "A concerted and focused investigation with increased resources is now needed, and I look forward to continuing to uncover answers for the people of New Jersey with these new tools at hand. This investigation will continue with increased intensity."

Last week, the state Assembly released documents related to the bridge scandal obtained in a subpoena of the records of former Port Authority official David Wildstein, a Christie appointee. The documents showed that Bridget Anne Kelly, a deputy chief of staff to Christie, was involved in coordinating the closures, despite the governor's earlier assertion that no one in his office was involved.

Until last week, members of the Christie administration -- and the governor himself -- claimed that two of the three bridge access lanes in Fort Lee were shut down as part of a traffic study. But the released emails and text messages indicate there was a pettier, political motive at play, and that the closures were possibly intended as retribution against the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee, who did not endorse Christie's reelection bid.

The New Jersey transportation committee also subpoenaed testimony from Wildstein, who ordered the closures. But last week, he invoked his Fifth Amendment and refused to testify.

Wisniewski has said impeachment might be a possibility if evidence shows Christie was directly involved in the lane closures, which lasted from Sept. 9 to 13, causing massive traffic jams and delaying emergency personnel.

Christie’s staff cut access to Jersey City mayor who would not endorse him

View Photo Gallery — Christie works to contain bridge scandal: Gov. Chris Christie’s decision to oust Bill Stepien and Bridget Anne Kelly, aides implicated in the burgeoning scandal over George Washington Bridge lane closures, demonstrated the blunt force that he is willing to use to contain a crisis, even if it means exiling members of his innermost circle.

By Matea Gold, Monday, January 13, 2:39 PME-mail the writer

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s administration cut off the access of the newly elected mayor of Jersey City to top state officials last summer, documents released Monday show. The move came after the Democratic mayor declined to endorse the Republican governor’s reelection.

Christie’s staff initially set up a raft of meetings for Mayor Steven Fulop with state appointees shortly after he took office in July, according to e-mails and text messages released by Jersey City in response to a public records request by the Jersey Journal.

What Chris Christie has already lost

Chris Cillizza 2:10 PM ET

No matter what happens from here on out, the New Jersey governor has lost a lot.

But the meetings were scrubbed a few week later, about the time that aides to the Republican governor apparently learned that Fulop was not going to back him.

The treatment of Fulop feeds the perception that the Christie administration has used the governor’s office to punish people viewed as political enemies. The episode occurred several months before Christie aides orchestrated a scheme to paralyze traffic in Fort Lee, N.J., in an apparent act of political spitefulness against that town’s Democratic mayor, Mark Sokolich.

Christie’s spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

When asked at a news conference last week about the incident, Christie acknowledged that he has had conflicts with Fulop but said his administration was assisting Jersey City in several areas.

“We’ve continued to work with Jersey City over the course of time since he’s been mayor,” Christie said, adding: “I don’t know about specific meetings or what’s going on, but certainly, you know, I will look into all those things. But the fact is that what Mayor Fulop knows is, when we agree with him from a policy perspective, we’ll work with him. When we disagree with him, we’ll express those disagreements. And sometimes that’ll mean friction.”

The new documents show that the Christie administration initially took a warm approach to Fulop, a former Jersey City councilman who soundly defeated the incumbent mayor in a May election.

Christie called Fulop the night of his victory.

“Needless to say, congratulations on a tremendous job,” Christie political adviser Bill Stepien wrote in a text message to Fulop the next day. “I know the Governor reached out last night to relay his own congratulations. Let me know if we can help set up any meetings for you in Trenton as you enter transition with relevant commissioners, agency heads, etc.”

In late June, shortly before Fulop was set to take office, Christie’s then-deputy chief of staff, Bridget Anne Kelly, reached out to the incoming Jersey City mayor. (Christie fired Kelly last week after it emerged that she helped set in motion the Fort Lee traffic gridlock with an e-mail to a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey official that read, “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee.”)

In her friendly e-mail to Fulop, Kelly said the governor’s office wanted to facilitate meetings with key state officials he should know in his new post.

“Congratulations, Mayor Elect!” she wrote. “What an exciting time for you, and for the City. We’re looking forward to working closely with you and your Administration.”

She followed up a week later with an agenda detailing “Mayor’s Day,” a slew of back-to-back meetings, set to be held July 23 at Jersey City’s City Hall with top state officials. Among those scheduled to attend were state appointees representing the transportation, treasury, community affairs, economic development and recovery and rebuilding agencies.

“If there seems to be any Department missing, we can certainly try to ad or schedule another time,” Kelly wrote, adding that staff from the governor’s office would be on hand, as well.

Stepien texted Fulop again July 12, writing: “I know the Gov is sending quite a contingent of his Cabinet up to you on the 23rd. Let us know how we can continue to work closely together.”

By July 16, the group of state appointees headed to Jersey City had grown to eight, including Bill Baroni, the deputy executive director of the Port Authority. (Baroni resigned last month amid building questions about the Fort Lee gridlock.)

Around July 18, however, Christie advisers learned from Fulop allies that the mayor would not be backing his reelection bid, according a spokeswoman for Fulop.

The cancellations then poured in. By July 22, all of the state officials had backed out of Mayor’s Day, citing scheduling conflicts and offering no alternative dates, according to an e-mail from a Fulop scheduler to the mayor.

Fulop’s attempts to reschedule the meetings went nowhere.

In an August e-mail to Baroni, the mayor wrote, “I am not sure if it is a coincidence that your office cancelled a meeting several weeks back that seemed to be simultaneous to other political conversations elsewhere that were happening. Prior to that you were always very responsive and I sincerely hope the two issues are not related.”

The documents do not show any response from Baroni or other top Christie officials.

In a statement Monday, Fulop said the e-mails “speak for themselves.”

“Our administration has sought to operate in a professional and cooperative manner with the Christie Administration,” he said. “Whether cabinet officials meetings, Port Authority lease negotiations or reforming our municipal pension system; it is my hope that State decisions be based on the merits.”

Exactly, and last I checked, there were hearings on all those issues. Unless you're saying Issa isn't a real person.

Bill Press: Unbelievable Gov. Christie

By Bill Press - 01/13/14 06:24 PM EST

Last week, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie gave a 107-minute-long news conference last week, pirouetting from skeptic to penitent on the George Washington Bridge scandal. Whether you like his politics or not, you have to admit it was one hell of a show.

For four months, Christie had made fun of the whole incident. Then, overnight, he was forced to acknowledge it was a serious problem that his close aides had instigated as a childish act of political payback.

Suddenly, we saw a Chris Christie we’d never seen before. He was embarrassed. He was contrite. He was even — almost — humble.

.....

Christie might be asked to testify in two ongoing investigations, by the state Legislature and the Port Authority of New Jersey and New York, which could drag on for weeks, and federal officials are probing his alleged misuse of Hurricane Sandy funds. Meanwhile, the U.S. attorney for New Jersey is weighing a possible criminal investigation. Shutting down a vital public roadway for political games is, in fact, a crime.

Bill Press: Issa exposed on Benghazi

By Bill Press - 01/06/14 05:11 PM EST

The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is one of the most powerful committees in Congress. As the House’s watchdog committee, with almost unlimited investigative authority, it can be used as a force for good, as it was under former Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) when it targeted waste of taxpayer dollars in government contracting, exposed the illegal business practices of Enron and held pharmaceutical companies accountable for high prices of prescription drugs.

.....

But, in a lengthy report published on Dec. 29, The New York Times refuted that claim. After months of on-the-ground investigation by reporters in Libya, the Times found no evidence of involvement by al Qaeda in the assault. It was waged, instead, by local militants, including some members of militias we had helped in their efforts to overthrow Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi. Not only that, concluded the Times, contrary to “claims by some members of Congress,” the attack “was fueled in large part by anger at an American-made video denigrating Islam.”

Clearly, under Issa, the House Oversight Committee has failed to meet the first principle of its mission statement: “Americans have a right to know that the money Washington takes from them is well spent.” Issa has instead wasted money, devoting a year and a half to manufacturing a major scandal about Benghazi, only to be exposed by The New York Times as fanning a pack of lies.

SEE MY POST FROM YESTERDAY, IMMEDIATELY BELOW.

TODAY THE NEW JERSEY STATE ASSEMBLY ISSUED 17 SUBPOENAS FOR INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED IN "BRIDGEGATE".

INDIVIDUALS NAMES WILL BE RELEASED ONLY AFTER THE INDIVIDUALS ARE SERVED.  MEANWHILE, GOVENOR CHRISTIE HAS HIRED A TEAM OF LAWYERS TO CONDUCT AN "INTERNAL INVESTIGATION" OF HIS STAFF, TO DETERMINE PRECISELY WHAT LAWS, IF ANY WERE BROKEN.    THIS CASE GETS LOONIER BY THE DAY.   SO FAR TWO INDIVIDUALS HAVE EXERCISED THEIR 5TH AMMENDMENT RIGHTS, IN THE INVESTIGATION.  I AM CURIOUS TO SEE HOW MANY OF TODAY'S 17 WILL DO LIKEWISE.  FUNNY, HOW THE GOPers HAVE SO UNSUCCESFULY TRIED TO EQUATE "BRIDGEGATE" WITH THE DISASTER AT BENGHAZI, YET NO ONE SUBPOENAED REGARDING BENGHAZI, HAS SEEN THE NEED TO EXERCISE THEIR 5TH AMMENDMENT RIGHTS.  MAKES A PRUDENT MAN WONDER IF ANY LIES HAVE BEEN TOLD.

WHERE THERE IS SMOKE THERE IS USUALLY FIRE....AND JUST AS MY FATHER ALWAYS SAYS; "THINGS ARE NEVER WHAT THEY APPEAR TO BE, HOWEVER THEY USUALLY ARE."
