« on: September 26, 2013, 01:56:45 PM »
Planted Collars, Turnips, Mustard, Beets, Rutabagas, Broccoli, Cabbage, and Red Onion. When I get back, I'm going to plant Carrot, and Sugar Snap Peas. Has anyone else here started your Winter garden?

I planted broccoli, greens and collards about two weeks ago. They are really growing fast. I do have a rabbit problem I'm trying to deal with. Left unchecked that sucker is going to ruin my young plants.

I have not touched a rabbit or a squirrel since I left Anson County.

In addition to gardening at the house, we participate in a community garden. We currently have 5-8'x10' raised beds, of which we're only planting in 3 of them. The other 2 we're going to donate to Hibiscus House, a facility that cares for abandoned and abused children. We help the children plant and care for their gardens. Haven't had a critter problem, but have had a human problem in the community garden from time to time.

Did you prep your soil before planting?

I did a soil test once and figured out that my soil was too acidity so I started applying heavy lime. I also went heavier on the Nitrogen. All of that just made the rabbits happier. Last year they ate my garden clean, every little bean that came up; snip, snip, snip. This spring I did not even bother planting a garden. I need a dog or something.  :(

Could I still grow a Garden if the neighborhood Home Owners Association does not allow it?

In John's Creek, Georgia.

Go ahead, you still have time. Put a few collard plants in for Thanksgiving. Pop them in the ground and walk away. No need to till your entire space. You can do that tomorrow. You will not have any problems unless of course there is a hungry rabbit watching your every move.  >:( It's days like this I wish Brother Tony lived near by. Poor little sucker would not have a fighting chance. He would be bringing rabbit leftovers to work while wearing a rabbit coat.
