Was Lawrence Joel a black man?
« on: November 12, 2011, 12:06:06 AM »
After many years of visiting Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum in Winston, I just read an article that leads me to believe the coliseum was named after an African American.  Tried a search on onnidan, but didn't get any results.  Can someone help me out on this?

Not only was Lawrence Joel a Black man, he won the Medal of Honor and is buried in Arlington.  There is a medical clinic named after him on Fort Bragg.  He died of complications from diabetes.

Thanks for the clarification.  I read the exciting article in the Winston Salem paper online yesterday.  Very enlightening and eye wakening.  An awesome honor and just reward for the city in naming the coliseum after him.

Lawrence Joel (February 22, 1928–February 4, 1984) was a United States Army Sergeant First Class who served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. While serving in Vietnam, as a medic with the rank of Specialist Five assigned to 1st Battalion of the 503rd Infantry Regiment in the 173rd Airborne Brigade, Joel received the Silver Star and the Medal of Honor for his heroism in a battle with the Viet Cong that occurred on November 8, 1965.

He was the first living African American to receive this medal since the Spanish-American War in 1898.

He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery Arlington, Virginia. His grave can be found in section 46, lot 15-1.

Thanks Y & NovaSkegee...

I grew up 5 blocks from the arena.  We were told numerous stories about his heroism on the battlefield...most notably his triage in the midst of all hell breaking loose.
