School ja-- bands get support from Florida Marlins

Two local high schools ja-- bands are getting some financial help from the Marlins Community Foundation to get to New York for the Essentially Ellington High School Competition.

The foundation is awarding $30,000 to Dillard High in Broward County and New World School of the Arts in Miami-Dade to defray expenses. The musicians will be competing against 13 other school ja-- bands from across the country this Thursday through Saturday. Last year, Dillard came in second place.

The competition gives teens the chance to go to workshops and jam sessions with ja-- greats including Wynton Marsalis.

Christopher Dorsey, the director of Dillard's Ja-- band, said the money will go a long way for the school's program.

"It's incredible,'' he said. "Now we just have to think about the music.''

The money will be presented at Wednesday's Miami-Dade School Board meeting.
