Being from Greensboro I wanted to leave home to go to college.  I applied to and was accepted to Virginia State, Hampton, and of course NCCU.   NCCU was the lease expensive plus scholarship money.

My freshman year we had students from along the eastern seaboard from Virginia to New York.   There was one young lady from Baton Rouge.  She came to NCCU because her parents are NCCU graduates.   Her father was an assistant football coach at Southern U back in 1969.

NCCU, NCA&T, Livingstone, Howard and East Carolina

Thank God I got some sense and made my final choice after attending the NCCU vs. NCA&T Turkey Day Classic in Greensboro, NC, in November 1967. Being from "Down East" in the state of North Carolina, that was the first time that I had seen NCC vs. N&T play, when I was in High School.  The Fans, Students and Alumni from both sides, were off of the chain, as usual. Yes, NCCU lost the game that year, in the last minute or so, but NCC won me for Life.  ;D

I was really seriously leaning towards NCA&T until NCCU completely woke me up, during and after that game.    :hugs:

Take care!

I only filled out two applications - Tuskegee and U-M (because my high school counselor/homeroom teacher was a U-M alum and made all of us fill one out). Got accepted to both. My dad said "You can go to school where you want but your tuition is going to Tuskegee." End of discussion...

Well for me, I had options, however at the end of the day, I wanted to continue Family tradition and attend Southern University.  Being reared in a town that was, and still IS in some ways Race-Oriented, I did not want to endure Racism as much as I did.  Or so I thought... I chose an HBCU and had no clue I would experience Racism/Classism in my own Race...
Eye Opening experience for me however.  I would not change a thing.

Other Universities of Interests...
1. LSU
2. ULL(formerly USL)
3. FAMU
4. Auburn****Really considered****

I had already made my mind up to attend Howard. Got there to to tour the campus/surrounding area and it was awful.

Students looked like gangsters, and you couldnt tell them apart from the general gangsters in the area. buildings didnt look up to par for the most part either.

The price of things was kind of an issue too. I know DC has a relatively pricey standard, and I have no issue with that. I refuse however to pay for a high price of living to live in a hood.

Georgia Tech waitlisted me before letting me in....I refused after that.

Went to Brown University  and was completely put off when this lady, who could barely speak english her self, complain about not being able to understand my accent. Joke of a school....probably the only IVY that would have accepted me though.

UCLA - Childhood dream to attend the hometown school. Ended up not going because they were going to make me walk on to the track team instead of offering a scholarship.

Cal State Long Beach - Offered me a track scholarship

University of Georgia - Recruited me for track

Cal State Fullerton - Recruited me for track and offered a scholarship

Alabama State U. - They visited my school and convinced me to apply

Only other school I applied to was Howard, which I really wanted to go to because  I grew up in Tuskegee and I wanted to go away.  Administrative SNAFUs caused me to get accepted late (by the time I was accepted at Howard, TU had accepted me and offered a scholarship).  The final Straw was when Howard sent me a letter 3 weeks before it was time to go saying they had  lost all of my Financial Aid info and I had to re apply for Financial aid in order to get the scholarship that Howard's Engineering school had offered me.

Went to TU, parents let me live on campus, and I've never regretted it.

Albany State was my first choice, but Kentucky State offered a scholarship and I went there for two years before I got hurt and came home to Albany State. I also wanted to attend Florida State but my father had "that talk" with me.

FAMU - Spent time on campus during my dad's tenure there.  It was during my elementary and middle school years where I was getting old enough to begin understanding the HBCU culture.  Had a lot of connections.

Morehouse - Mom worked at AU during my very early childhood years.  I was intrigued about the stories that she told about the AUC, both as separate universities, and as a single entity.

Tennessee St. - Had a great uncle who was an alum that encouraged my cousins and myself to visit and attend.  They were going through the desegregation suit with the St. of TN at the time.  Wasn't real sure of their future as an HBCU.

NC A&T - Another uncle who was a Aggie that thought that Greensboro was the center of the world.
