Former state Del. Phil Hamilton is the first Virginia lawmaker in more than a decade to face the prospect of prison time for alleged criminal conduct.

Hamilton surrendered to federal authorities Thursday after being indicted on bribery and extortion charges. He is accused of soliciting a job at Old Dominion University while securing state funding for it. He could be sentenced to as much as 30 years. .....

Hamilton, a Newport News Republican, lost his re-election bid in 2009 after 21 years in the House following revelations that he was angling for a $40,000-a-year job with a new teacher training center at ODU while sponsoring the center's start-up funding.
