What do you fear most about aging?
« on: December 02, 2010, 11:49:31 AM »

My main fear is health and health care cost. The thing about health care costs is that your are damned if you do and are damned if you don't. If you save and have one catastrophic event, cancer, heart.....your savings will be wiped out. If you don't have your own means, government health is very sub par.   :(  Sometimes I wonder if it is better to check out of this life before you even get to the health roller coaster.  I mean is the cost worth the few extra months you might get being on chemo?

Well diet plays a role in disease.  Do the Mediterranean or Asia diet--which is red meat once a week in on diet and red meat one a month in Asian diet. red meat inflammes the arteries and lead to all these chronic disease.  If you do eat beef, eat beef that was GRASS fed , not grain feed.  Also have a high fiber diet.  Studies amony Afircan tribes who took 60 grams of fiber per day, showed no sign of heart, G-I or diseases of aging. I don't expect 60 grms , but 2 tablesponfulls of metamucil per day would help.  Also if you do eat a steak, always have a salad with tomatoes in it.  Intake of red meat tends to clog and lessen the diameter of the arteries, thus impeding blood flow that can lead to heart disease.  Studies show if you eat a tomato immediately after meat intake, it greatly decreases the chance of those artieries closing.

I fear not being here for my kids and family. Lord knows I need t exercise more and eat better. My doctor recommended the Mediterranean Diet as well.

The good...or bad... thing for me is that my body will tell on me if I don't eat right. Too much red meat and dairy and here comes a gout flare up. My movements aren't as frequent...you know they say death can be in the colon. Add in my obesiety, high bp and oh yeah, my dad passed away in 1988 at the age of 42 from colon cancer.

I'm 42 now and my 43rd birthday will be celebrated like it's 1999! I cut da monkey when I turned 40. But 43 is gonna be off da charts!!

Although I'm all for the Mediterranean Diet, I'm not so sure that I believe that last part. Is there a review or journal article that supports that position? I know that red meat has a high amount of saturated fat that contributes toward clogging of blood vessels. I'd not heard anything about inflammation, however.

I think also having a positive outlook about getting older helps you stay healthy. That is why Iwuold not want ot live in a senior community. :nono2:

My concern about getting older is having a health issue and losing my good health.

My health is good, I watch my weight and I exercise, live an organic life and eat a mainly vegeterian diet. I used to be a full-on vegetarian.

I am very conscious of keeping doctors' appointments and follow-up check ups.
I also have a naturopathic doctor.

My grandmother was a diabetic, and I saw how dedicated she was to following her diet, so she could stay off insulin.

But a lot of her friends did not and those ladies lost limbs and even their eyesight.

There is nothing like having your good health!!

My fear is completely vain.

I am afraid that my thick, fuzzy afro will get thin and fall out.

I have always had a massive head of hair and never had issues getting it to grow. But I see so many older women with thin hair it makes me scared.

BTW...I started reading this while I was eating acheeseburger for lunch. Note to self: no more burgers.

I can understand that about the hair too.
But I think it  is how you treat your hair and how you take care of yourself that determines what happens when you are older.

My mom and aunts all have their hair.

And both my grandmothers all had a full head of hair as they aged.

Same here Soror. I love my hair and face. I try to take care of them both with good diet and plenty of water.

If you Cats love your hair you better consider going natural to preserve it. On meat, meat is not inherently bad. It's bad because of the things we do to it and the things that are in the environment. We spray herbicides and pesticides, this accumulates in body tissue over a life time. We eat those animals and ingest those poisons to go along with what we already have. On top of that we add chemical to meat to keep it safe and to preserve it. No wonder we are riddled with cancers and such.  If you would raise your own animals and limit the chemicals, you will be much better off.

The thing about good health is the fact that we all take it for granted until it starts slipping away. When I was younger, I thought I would always feel the same way I felt back them. I would pay anything to have that energy back and to have joints that don't ache.
Here is another dirty little secrets also. Working out and exercising when you are young is not going to make you feel better as you age.   Don't get me wrong, my core systems are perfect but the connective tissue is about shot to hell from being active. Hence, I probably hurt more than the person who sat on their a$$ and did nothing. Ask any athlete and they will tell you the same thing. Old coaches are always hobbling up to me and telling me that I walk like an old athlete. I laugh and then he start telling me about all of his battle scars.  :brickwall:

Well M&G, I have learned that everything has a cost in this life, everything.  If you talk to a good looking or rich person, you'll will be amazed at all the stuff they go through. Very attractive women have a very hard time finding love. Pretty men get dogged period. Now if you take somebody like M&G, boy got women all over the place.
