A task force wanted to help a financially ailing HBCU in North Carolina. It was disbanded.

UPDATED MARCH 17, 2023

“Despite our efforts and financial commitment, Barber-Scotia College officials refuse to work in partnership with us, and have continuously obstructed the work of the Task Force,” Lindsay Manson, a spokesperson for the City of Concord, said in a news release Thursday. “We no longer believe it is possible for the Task Force to work effectively in pursuit of a revitalized campus.”

It sounds like Barber Scotia College didn't think they would be charged property taxes.

They are a private institution, correct?

Just shut them down, and take the campus for back taxes.  When you have nothing, you're in no position to make demands and be difficult. I'm just wondering what those 4 students are thinking being at such a place?

Reason why I asked is because of the tax situation which reminded me of a rail company that thought that they were exempt from paying property taxes like the other major rail companies were. In the 1800, the U.S. government land granted property across the country to rail companies to build rail lines for the expansion on the country. That land is tax exempt. Florida East Coast Railroad was built by Henry Flagler who bought property along the east coast of Florida to run his rail line from Jacksonville to Key West. Back in the 90s, counties along the that rail line got into a legal dispute with the East Coast Rail Line because they felt that their rail line should be tax exempt like other rail lines in the country. They lost and had to pay a lot of back taxes.
