Why Don't More HBCUs Have Phi Beta Kappa Chapters?
« on: March 13, 2023, 08:58:52 PM »
A quick scan revealed that only three HBCUs(Howard, Morehouse, Spelman) have Phi Beta Kappa chapters. I wonder why?

Legitimate question, but https://www.pbk.org/Chapter-Directory reveals that there are four: Howard, Morehouse, Spelman, and Fisk.

I'm speculating here. But something tells me that is the results of the Black Power Movement of the 60s.PBK was seen as a white elitist moniker and most HBCUs had nothing to do with it after the few that had.

I knew/know people who still use it from Howard and its listed in the graduation programs.

Since PBK stands for scholastic excellence, it just seems as if it would be something to aspire to. Especially since it would give HBCUs more credibility.

Phi Beta Kappa has had a rule that a college/university must have at least 10 Phi Beta Kappa members on the faculty/staff (among other requirements) to be considered for review.  About 10% of American colleges/universities are invited to join for membership.  If your faculty/staff did not go to the sort of institutions that have Phi Beta Kappa chapters or did and weren't elected to membership (no more than 10% of arts and sciences undergrad seniors), then they aren't eligible to start a chapter.

This Journal of Blacks in Higher Education argues that the rule was racially motivated.

Most HBCUs that don't have Phi Beta Kappa chapters, have chapters of Phi Kappa Phi, which is similar but broader-based.  When institutions seek to position themselves for review for Phi Beta Kappa membership, they often privilege PBK members in faculty recruitment.

I do not think that it that it is racist. There is a numerical qualification for faculty who are members. I am not certain of what it is, but I think that it is based on size of faculty.
Schools can apply. Then you have a visitation committee. I will never forget how proud I was when our three-member visitation committee at then 30,000 student Western Michigan University,
without prior notice stepped into our faculty meeting. One of the three was a professor from then 1,500 student Morehouse. We embraced. After they left, one of my colleagues said "you know him"? My reply was "yes, he is from Morehouse".

That 10 faculty members of PBK needs to be changed. A lawsuit might be needed.
