As discussed during this morning’s ORD Director’s Meeting, please see the attachments displaying the nine installations that will be renamed during calendar year 2023.  As of 24 FEB 23, only Fort Barfoot (Pickett) for 24 MAR and Fort Novosel (Rucker) for 10 APR are confirmed for ceremonies. Fort Gregg-Adams (Lee) is expected to be confirmed soon for 27 APR (if not already confirmed). LTG(P) Hamilton is expected to be the Senior Army Attendee with a speaking role for Fort Gregg-Adams.

This is long over due...it's going to take generations, but we have to reserve the confederacy for the history books. Growing up in the South it's a part of our daily lives. Confederates are honored with their names on schools, government buildings, parks, bridges, etc.

We all know why this was done...and it sure as hell wasn't to bring the country together, or seek healing in the nation after the civil war. They didn't ask, or care how Black people felt about how they when out of their way to honor our oppressors. Modern confederates will go out of their way to "erase" our history, and fight to keep it out of schools...yet those same people will cry foul if a monument to one of the enemies of our nation is taken down.

FORT BENNING, GA TO FORT MOORE (ON BEHALF OF LTG HAL MOORE, THEN      LIEUTENANT COLONEL AND BATTALION COMMANDER IN THE 101ST INFANTRY DIVISION (AIRBORNE).  THIS WAS THE FIRST MAJOR ENGAGMENT BETWEEN U.S. FORCES AND NORTH VIETNAMESE REGULARS.  THAT BATTLE WAS DEPICTED IN THE MOVIE "WE WERE SOLDIERS", STARRING MEL GIBSON.  IT WAS RENAMED IN COMMERATION OF LTG HAL MOORE AND HIS WIFE JULIA MOORE. HE WAS RENOWNED FOR THE FACT THAT HE WAS LEADER BY EXAMPLE. HE STATED AND WAS THE FIRST SOLDIER TO TOUCH GROUND IN THE COMBAT AREA OF OPERATIONS AND THE LAST TO LEAVE THE BATTLEFIELD ONLY AFTER ALL HIS SOLDIERS WERE ACCOUNTED FOR.

FORT BRAGG, NC TO FORT LIBERTY --- RENAMED IN COMMERATION OF THE AMERICAN VALUR OF LIBERTY.

FORT A.P. HILL, VA TO FORT WALKER --- RENAMED IN COMMORATION OF DR. MARY EDWARDS WALKER A CIVIL WAR DOCTOR AND EARLY SUPPORTER OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS.

FORT HOOD, TX TO FORT CAVAZOS -- RENAMED IN HONOR OF THE FIRST HISPANIC AMERICAN SOLDIER ATTAINING THE RANK OF GENERAL.

FORT LEE, VA TO FORT GREGG-ADAMS --- RENAMED IN COMMORATION OF LTG ARTHUR GREGG AND AFRICAN AMERICAN FAMED AS THE "FATHER OF ARMY LOGISTICS". (I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO MEET HIM AT FORT LEE, VIRGINIA IN 1995).  ALSO NAMED IN COMMEORATION OF LTC CHARITY ADAMS AN AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN AND SENIOR LEADER IN THE WOMEN'S ARMY CORPS (WAC) DURING WWII.

FORT PICKETT, VA TO FORT BARFOOT --- RENAMED IN COMMENERATION OF TECHNICAL SERGEANT VAN T. BARFOOT ONLY ONE OF SEVEN SOLDIERS OF AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE TO WIN THE MEDAL OF HONOR IN HISTORY FOR ACTIONS IN VIETNAM. Co


FORT POLK, LA TO FORT JOHNSON --- RENAMED IN COMMERATION OF SGT WILLIAM HENRY JOHNSON AN AFRICAN AMERICAN SOLDIER WHO RECEIVED THE MEDAL OF HONOR FOR ACTIONS IN WWI.  AS A THEN-PRIVATE, WHEN HIS UNIT'S POSITION WAS ABOUT TO BE OVERRUN BY THE GERMANS, HE ENGAGED THE ENEMY WITH RIFLE FIRE UNTIL HIS AMMUNITION WAS EXPENDED AND HE THEN ENGAGED AND KILLED OVER 12 ADDITIONAL GERMAN SOLDIERS WITH HIS TRENCH KNIFE, WHILE ALREADY BADLY WOUNDED BY RIFLE FIRE. HIS ACTIONS RESULTED IN HIS ALL-AFRICAN AMERICAN UNIT REPULSING THE ENEMY ASSAULT.

FORT RUCKER, AL TO FORT NOVOSEL --- RENAMED IN COMMERATION OF CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER 4 NICHAEL J. NOVOSEL, SR.  FOR COMBAT ACTIONS IN VIETNAM.
