Still looking for a ‘Black mecca,’ the new Great Migration
« on: January 25, 2023, 10:28:11 AM »
New York, Los Angeles and Chicago are becoming less Black as African Americans leave the cities that drew their elders

The percentage of Black Americans who live in the South has been increasing since 1990, and the biggest gains have been in the region’s large urban areas, according to census data. The Black population of metro Atlanta more than doubled between 1990 and 2020, surpassing 2 million in the most recent census, with the city overtaking Chicago as the second-largest concentration of African Americans in the country after metropolitan New York. The Black population also more than doubled in metro Charlotte while greater Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth both saw their Black populations surpass 1 million for the first time. Several smaller metro areas also saw sizable gains, including San Antonio; Raleigh and Greensboro, N.C.; Orlando and Little Rock.

We are obsessed with following white people. I would argue that the decay in many of our communities is not just because of white flight but black middle class flight as well. At point, you have to build your own and do for self.

Plus you had deidustrilization of the north which led to loss of blue ollar jobs in the north. Plus white
flight to the suburbs diminished the cities tax base.  Most of your major industries are moving to the. South

Plus conditions in the north deteriorated you just as much racism  job discrimination in the north as the south  most blacks moving to the south are young and college educated.

I could never see myself living in New York  Cleveland or Chicago. The farthest north I would move is DC.

Blacks can't build their own. We are 224 years behind whites and also behind other ethnic groups. We don't have neighborhoods but just the HOOD. We don't have enough businesses to hire each other We don't have an information system (tv radio) we don't involve ourselves in local politics (lobbying and pact formation) we don't have codes of behavior. We are too much into integration

This has been happening for a while. As you all know, I grew up in Compton, CA. When I left in 1990 to attend Morehouse I was amazed at how many Black people there were in Atlanta, and the South in general. Since I moved back to LA County in 2014 I REALLY notice how few Black people we have here in SoCal. If this wasn't my home, I more than likely would've settled somewhere in the South. But I love Los Angeles...............high prices and all.

But, my father's side of my family DID migrate here during the Great Migration. So, I'm the first generation born out here. ;)
