"Ma" actress Octavia Spencer claimed that Los Angeles, California struck her as much more racist than her hometown of Montgomery, Alabama.

During a recent podcast interview, Spencer explained that though she had anticipated the city in the blue state to be a "free and liberal thinking place," once she got there, she experienced "more racism" than she ever had in Alabama.

Spencer, who starred in big Hollywood pictures "The Help" and "Hidden Figures," made her revealing comments on the podcast "WTF with Marc Maron."

SOUNDS ENTIRELY PLAUSIBLE TO ME.  I HAVE EXPERIENCED MORE OVERT RACISM IN THE BALT/DC/NORTHERN VA AREA THAN I HAVE HERE IN THE NORTHERN ALABAMA / TENNESSE VALLEY AREA, OVER THE LAST 12 YEARS.

The thing about the south is that white folk will let you know how they feel about you and will basically stay out of your way in most cases. In other parts of the country they will be up in your face grinning, saying they love you, and then when opportunity presents itself, they will undercut you.

This is exactly it. Southern wypipo will keep boundaries. They aren't coming to your part of town like ever. Just don't come to theirs.

I remember going out to eat in Beverly Hills at Crustacean with a girlfriend of mine. We were seated but after nearly 45 minutes with nothing but water we left. We also were stared at the whole time we were on Rodeo Drive. Our best experience was at a Jamaican restaurant. The owners were super nice. The worst racism I ever experienced was in LA and Miami.

There are definitely parts of Los Angeles with a long standing racist agenda. In the 50's and 60's, it was LAPD's Police Chief William H. Parker's unwritten policy to recruit racist White males from the South to deal with the growing Black population in Los Angeles. Up until 2009, LAPD's former headquarters building was named after Chief Parker.  Also, former Police Chief Daryl Gates, who was the chief during the 1992 Riots was once Chief Parker's chauffeur in the beginning of his career. During Daryl Gates tenure as chief, LAPD became the country's model for racist policing, which is why it's NOT hard to believe some of the stuff that Christopher Dorner had written in his manifesto. Also, Daryl Gates started the various tactical police units we see today, such as SWAT, which he is known as the father of SWAT. In addition to the above, Los Angeles was also ground zero for the FBI's COINTELPRO.

Quote
Parker recruited Marines and Army personnel after tours of duty and he recruited Southern white males who had a certain racial view of the world, then he put them on the streets of Los Angeles. The mentality was pervasive and abusive, and corrupt to its very core. Police beat black and Latino residents, assaulted their women, and governed by fear and intimidation in the same way they did in the South.

I have experienced more racism in North Alabama then I have in Atlanta. See how that goes....  We tend to see what we want when we want. I might think Big Rita is to much for me, but Fat Lisa can get it.

Maybe. I bet women like Meghan Markle would say the opposite.

LA is very forgiving to black women of a certain phenotype.

Mane I've seen these white folks in Huntsville treat black Ivy league they went to Dee Dee technical college. Veteran status for black people don't mean squat to these white boys in Huntsville unless their hands get tied by HR. I sat in on a interview one time with these brother who had Oldsport mentality that attended MIT. When I tell you that dude was in a hot box pledging in the 80's. Reminded me of that time in fall 1990 we walked one of my home boys down to the Library on campus when the Ques had their smoker mane that dude came out of there running down the block with no shoes no. Mane that dude was quite for about two weeks. PO fella.  :no:What ever happened down at the bottom of that library scared him for life.  :'(

:(……….yeah, what JT states here says it best. I don’t care WHERE you go in this country - north, south, east or west - there really is NO PLACE, beyond the confines of our segregated neighborhoods and bantustans, where the negro is fully embraced.

I may occasionally use “aggressive” language on this board, replete, on occasion, with raw street vernacular. But to actually SEE me, without me speaking a word, the general impression is that your humble poster presents himself as a congenial, friendly negro grandfather.

But make no mistake, in the main, white folks are generally “uncomfortable” around negroes. And there are a WHOLE HOST of reasons for their being uncomfortable. A great many whites simply loathe our very presence. And we need to be clear on THAT as well.
