Give us a synopsis Capler. Seventeen minutes is a long time. I don't have that much patience

……..bruh, your comment piqued my interest and I watched all 17mins of this interview. All I knew about Montell Jordan prior to seeing this video is he is the singer in the club anthem, “This is How We Do it”. But dude is rather engaging and seemed quite interesting.

Not sure why Capler titled the thread the way he did because the discussion of pledging a frat consumed, what, five of the total 17+ minutes. Oh, well…………….

Shows like Vlad TV tend to title their videos for clickbait, so I guess this cat decided to label this one the way he did. Add in the fact that he notes (after finding out that Montell is a Kappa) that he's a Sigma, I am sure this was the first thing he thought about when labeling this video.

Overall, it was a solid segment. I knew some of the stuff already, and there were some good personal stories he shared about family, music, his quick daliance into basketball, and stuff like that.

Cut down the original title so it would fit into the thread space without creating a dangling clause.

He's right.  Spring 90 was the last time fraternities and sororities officially had pledge lines.

For some reason, the brakes really came off when I pledged (Spring 90) and the current GB was my DP.  I guess BRUHZ had to get their last chance of making things right. Once the new process started in 91, two of my LB's were suspended for trying to keep the brakes off in the new process.

Big Cap………my apologies, I realize now that you simply adopted the title that VLAD TV chose for the video segment.  The interviewer seemed a tad amateurish, especially when he was questioning MJ about Kim Fields and her brother being apart of MJ’s pledging process.

Btw, Pepperdine is a Church of Christ school and I have met over the course of my residency in Nashville a bunch of Pepperdine alums both undergrad and professional school. Nashville is a HUGE Church of Christ city. The COC is historically very conservative, and don’t believe in musical instruments in their church worship services.

I just wonder what was the school’s official policies about pledging fraternities and sororities when Jordan was a student in late 80’s/early 90’s?

........I actually enjoyed watching this video, it was very nice.  Two things stood out for me: 1) you strip away the name of the school, and this could have been a black students alumni reunion of pretty much ANY PWI in the nation; and 2) the crowd seemed to really relate to Montel Jordan, and it was seemingly reciprocated.  I guess that shouldn't be too surprising since both Pepperdine and USC are in LA County within, what, 30 minutes drive or so of each other?   I suspect Montel might have spent sometime on USC's yard while an undergrad at Pepperdine.  ;D

The difference is Pepperdine moved away from the hood to Malibu while USC continues to thrive with the hood nearby, which is why so many Black folks in Los Angeles like hanging around USC.

Well, also keep in mind that over the last 20+ years, USC has done a fairly good job of being a positive entity in the surrounding community. It's not always been like that but, I have to give credit where credit is due. Their Community Relations department has done a great job! With that being said, I have a number of friends who are Black USC and UCLA alums and they have pretty strong, active groups. I even went on a ski trip to Mammoth Mountain resort with the UCLA Black Alumni Association about three years ago and had a great time. Ironically, close to one third of the people on that trip were HBCU alums who lived in Los Angeles.............................that added an interesting dynamic to that trip, to say the least.
