Strike, I see you don't follow nor understand the dynamics at play at Albany State and the Georgia State HBCUs for the reason of my response of a few of our shock IF this hire is indeed factual. I think it would be a good hire, but it is quick. That's part of the shock as well.

that's all...
???…….YOGI, Quinn’s football experience, as set forth in soflo’s post^^^seemingly suggests that he is a quality hire as next head football coach at Albany State. Is the source of your angst grounded in the belief that the Albany State alumni and other constituencies weren’t properly notified PRIOR to the report of this hire going public?

Yogi,  I think that your post came off as this being a bad hire. IMHO, I think that Quinn will make ASU highly competitive in the SIAC, IF he's able to hire a good staff. Remember that you all already have our championship winning former track coach in Darlene Moore. ;)

Yogi, they got to understand, that GA state HBCUS are different breed. This quick move is unprecedented and suggest things were moving already.

Honestly, I didn't know where Quinn Gray was. I've stated that. I haven't heard his name in decades and how did this come about. From what was laid out, he's qualified hire. That's why I was asking was this FACTUAL from my fellow sister school, Albany State on confirmation of this because it's not on the University website nor an announcement made to this hire. You're still missing the point of my previous comment. Albany State currently has a WHITE AD since the consolidation of Albany State and Darton. There has been questionable hires there and how the state has been meddling in our all three state HBCUs the past decade. I see you don't understand the dynamics of what's happening at our state schools to the reason of the shock and awe, Strike.

Hey, I love Coach Moore and many alums didn't want her to leave. Trust me when I say. I hate that she left and I remember the move happening. Albany State has her.

Right, and I don't think they understand the plight of our schools in the state. In most hires in the state, they want to either have someone in place in January or after the fiscal year which would be the end of June going into July. I would like to know who were the other candidates.

exactly that is the process...I am not used to anything other than that. You did a national search in less than 30 days if this is the hire. Someone is leaking and that usually do not happen for us GA HBCUs, we either know or we have to wait.

???........no, sir, I DO NOT understand, that's why I kept asking for clarification.  Forgive me, but, no, I don't follow the dynamics of how the Ga public HBCU's interact with their governing bodies.  And, no, I did not know that Albany State has a "white" AD.  Perhaps we have previously discussed this on this board, and if we have, I missed that discussion.  So now that you have FINALLY provided some clarity, I can understand your angst.  Beyond ALL of that, however, Quinn Gray will make for an excellent football coach at Albany State.

He's a product of Dillard High School in Ft. Lauderdale and balled for the Rattlers.  What BETTER choice could 'bany State have made?

She has that personality. We loved, and still love her at FAMU. Plus, she a phenomenal coach and recruiter. Not only were her athletes top performers, but they were also top academic performers. Totally accessible. She's just an awesome person who I'm happy to call friend.

Moore is a graduate of Albany State. She came back home to coach.  I see nothing wrong with this hire nor the timing.

Here is that official announcement......

NFL Alumnus and MEAC Hall of Famer Quinn Gray Named Albany State Head Football Coach

Albany State University announces that Quinn Gray, Sr. has been named the 14th head football coach for the Golden Rams.

“Albany State University is excited to welcome Coach Quinn Gray to the Golden Rams family. His experience in coaching and as a National Football League player and student-athlete has provided Coach Gray with the experience and passion to lead the Golden Rams Football team. As a previous admission, academic, and compliance liaison, he is also committed to academic excellence and student success. It's important that our athletes feel comfortable following a leader that will help them build character and perseverance on and off the field of competition. Coach Gray will ensure that tradition continues. We are looking forward to another winning season under his direction,” said ASU President Marion Ross Fedrick.

Coach Gray currently serves as the senior offensive analyst at the University of Memphis.  Prior to his tenure at Memphis, Gray served as the quarterback's coach at Alcorn State University from 2020-2022.  He also served as the associate head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach at Florida A&M University (FAMU) from 2011-2014 and spent three seasons as head coach at Lincoln High School in Florida, producing nine Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) All-District Players, including the 2019 Tallahassee Quarterback Club Offensive Player of the Year, Special Teams Player of the Year, and Academic Player of the Year.

OK........now that we've got that all cleared up, your humble poster must now review the absolute CALAMITY of the '99 FCS semi-finals Rattler playoff loss to Youngstown State.  The game was played in Youngstown's stadium, "affectionately" referred to then as the Ice Palace.  Game time temperature at kickoff of that December game was somewhere in the mid-30's.  And it felt even colder because Youngstown, Ohio is situated on the "plains" of northeast Ohio.  It was BITTER cold.

So the Rattlers are up by 10 with less than 5 minutes to go in the game, ball is on YSU's five yard line or so, and Rattlers are driving for another TD that would have surely SEALED the game.  My homeboy and I and other Rattlers are delirious, actually making plans to travel to Chattanooga that next weekend for the Championship game.   And then.........AND THEN.......the bottom falls out. Quinn throws a pick deep inside YSU's 10 yard line, SHOCKING everybody, and YSU eventually drives the length of the field and scores on the turnover.  Rattlers couldn't run the clock off on its next possession, then YSU scores again........GAME OVER!!!

Guys, as most of you know, these were the days before the proliferation of cell phones, the internet, etc.  Most reporting there was of this game is what was reported in the Youngstown and Tallahassee newspapers.  To this day, my homeboy was in such a state of shock losing that game that he swears he never read any news accounts of the game.

Most Rattlers, I think, have forgiven Quinn for that loss.  I have for the MOST part forgiven him as well........but that game STILL gnaws at me.

ASU and FAMU has had a relationship that goes way back to before I was in school at FAMU. When we (FAMU) were still a member of the SIAC, they used to be our first opponent during the football seasons.
