Respect For Marriage Act Vote
« on: November 30, 2022, 09:22:03 AM »
I swear, some people amaze the hell out of me. Moscow Mitch was one of 37 Repub Senators who voted against the act. This dude has been in an interracial marriage for years. How does he even look at himself or his wife with a straight face?

Alum^^^your humble poster CLEARLY understands the point you’re making, but how is “interracial marriage” defined under the law? Mitch’s old lady, I believe, is of Chinese descent. But is being Chinese a distinct “race”?

Somebody more informed than me please break this down for a brutha.

Well, from my perspective, an interracial marriage is the Union between two people who are from different races or ethnicities. To me, she is of a different ethnicity than he. Just as my cousin did when he was in the military. He married a Korean-American. I’m not sure how you chose to define it, thus, not inclined to sit here and change your view on it. To me, their Union is fitting how I define it.

???^^^I'm really not interested in personal opinions, including mine own.  I wanna know what the law says.  Can someone post on this thread the RELEVANT provisions of the Marriage Act concerning "interracial" marriages that the senate just passed.  I'm interested in the exact wording of THAT law.

Race is a "social" construct, but "ethnicity" is the thing that distinguishes us.

Sigh….
.......what are you "sighing" for, dude?  I just simply asked if someone could post to this thread the precise provisions of the Marrige Act that the Senate passed yesterday.  Why do you find that request exasperating?  I tried to find the provisions myself, but so far have been unsuccessful.  But there are several peeps out there more "adept" at internet research than this particular negro grandfather. C'mon, boss, you know the rules on the Politics page. We try to traffic in FACTS on this page, not the silliness that too often drives the conversation on the Discussion page.

So, while Alum continues to "sigh," can someone simply post the language of the Act that the Senate passed yesterday?

Muchas gracias;D

It appears the text of the bill contains no definition of interracial marriage.

However, it appears that historically, laws prohibiting interracial marriages also included marriages between Whites and Asians.

....THESE LAWS, CREATED IN THE EARLY 18TH CENTURY, WERE ORIGINALLY WRITTEN WITH THE INTENT TO PREVENT MARRIAGE BETWEEN WHITE AND BLACK BUT WERE ULTIMATELY EXPANDED TO INCLUDE NATIVE AMERICANS AND ASIANS

Chinese is considered Asian and Asian is a race if I'm not mistaken.

………Wildman^^^has posted the language of the senate bill’s on interracial marriage and other materials which CLEARLY supports your definition here. So the question then arises about what you mentioned about Mitch McConnell.  And that is how could that mofo with a straight face vote against interracial marriage when he’s been in one for several years now?

But, hey, Mitch is a turtle and will spin ANYTHING. So no need to hold your breath waiting for that creep to respond.

Interracial marriage is not the only thing in the bill.  Reading is Fundamental.

Yeah, I guess it is more important to McConnell to be against same sex marriage than it is to be for interracial marriage. :tiptoe:

At one time in the USA, it was illegal for an Asian man to marry an Asian woman.  White men saved Asian women for themselves. So Mitch might have that mindset.
