Florida A&M in the FCS playoffs was clear snub
« on: November 21, 2022, 03:41:02 PM »
Selection Sunday turned into a solemn Sunday on the campus of Florida A&M.  Less than 24 hours after FAMU defeated the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 41-20 in the 2022 Florida Blue Florida Classic, there was a late hit…and it came from the NCAA FCS Selection Committee.  Florida A&M, by many accounts, was expected to make the 24-team field of the FCS playoffs for the second consecutive year, but instead it was snubbed from the field leaving a cloud of wonder, confusion, and disappointment.

Me neither. I can see the committee's reasoning for leaving out FAMU this season.

The SWAC faces similar problems in FCS to what the Pac-12 faces in getting a team into the 4-team FBS playoffs - the conference is considered the second or third-weakest in FCS. In the interview on ESPN yesterday, the selection committee chair did not think scheduling Division II Albany State was a good move and clearly held that against FAMU. When you factor in that FAMU was blown out in last year's playoff appearance coupled with the SWAC having never in its history won a I-AA/FCS playoff game and FAMU's loss to the only FCS-ranked team they played (Jackson State); I can't see getting too upset over FAMU being left out this year - they should schedule at least 2 non-conference games vs. FCS teams from the stronger conferences or projected conference champions.

That plus we struggled all season with team we should have dominated easily. We didn't play up to our potential.

There was no snub. Everyone knew it was a longshot. Rattlers, if you're going to keep one eye on the playoffs then you may want to add another out of conference fcs team to the schedule.

I don't know about FAMU being snubbed or WE continue to fail in not deciding whether we want the Playoffs or HBCU revenue. As we've discussed about the Division II playoffs, it comes down to strength of schedule and teams you play within your Division.

that's all...

There are 2 ways to look at it. Yes, strength of schedule plays a role, but also teams that were ranked lower than FAMU received a bid to the playoffs. Another thing that hurt FAMU is that they struggled with teams in the conference that they shouldn't have struggled with given talent they have. And that's a result of poor game management. I'll probably be the only with this opinion, but we were 9-2 this season by default, not because we raised any hell on the field.

We could have both if our schedules were stronger.

soflo, I was thoroughly disappointed in the way you all played Jackson State after the inspired play against UNC lacking 28 of your star players. I saw the teams with worse records than you guys got selected. Just like Fayetteville State leapfrog us and a few other teams better than them. It's a head scratcher.

that's all...
