CU….get in here boss, Fetterman/Oz Debate
« on: October 26, 2022, 06:26:35 AM »
:(……….ok, so last nite in Harrisburg, PA, was the only senate debate between John Fetterman and Dr. Oz. Your humble poster did not see the debate, but have seen vid clips and read reports and it appears it wasn’t a good nite for the Dem, Lt. Gov. Fetterman.  It’s trench warfare for control of the US senate, and the Dems NEED this pickup.

Wanna know what other peeps think, especially my man, CU, who is (was?) based in Harrisburg.

Fetterman addressed his stroke from the start.  Fetterman didn't knock it out of the park.  He didn't have to.

I didn't see the debate and I would assume he performed how anyone would who was recovering from a stroke. From what I understand, he often stammered and had difficulty with articulation when he needed to speak. With that being said, that is normal and has nothing to do with his cognitive ability or what his policy positions are. People should judge the candidates on who would be represent PA best. Honestly, I think peoples minds are made up. When people say they are undecided at this time of an election cycle, they are either uninformed or lying. There are two distinct choices. Fetterman has a history and record in PA Oz does not. I have heard more commentary on Oz's response to an abortion question where he said local politicians should be involved in a women's choice whether to have an abortion or not. That response may have sealed his fate.

Oz was speaking on whether Congress or the states should be responsible for abortion law.  He's done a poor job of saying this should be left to the states.

I thought Fetterman did a good job. His stuttering should go away.  You are right about people having their minds made up.  A CBS poll has Fetterman at 51%.  It's his election to lose.  I don't see him having a 'Caca' moment.

Being over 50% is usually the sweet spot when it comes to elections but you never know who is actually going to vote. We shall see.

.........yeah, largely concur in what you state here.  It is an informed, nuanced analysis of the campaign at this point. I do think, however, that a good number of Pennsylvanians who either saw and/or heard the debate wont be as "charitable" as you about Mr. Fetterman's articulation issues.  Apparently, one of the byproducts of the stroke is that he has suffered some "auditory" diminishment, substantial enough that he requires teleprompters to print what folks are saying to him.  At last nite's debate, teleprompters were mounted above the heads of the debate panel.  That way Fetterman could read the questions and dialogue in real time.

Look, from all the reports I've heard and read, this race is closing in favor of Dr. Oz.  And that's pathetic considering Oz's main residence is in New Jersey, and he appears to have done the minimum to establish residency in the commonwealth.  Hell, there was some question at the start of the campaign that Oz is actually still registered to vote in his native Turkey.  Was THAT issue ever resolved?

I guess we'll ALL hold our collective breaths about so many of these campaigns at least for the next two weeks.

From what I understand, Oz voted in Turkey's last election. Unfortunately, there may be some people who do not understand cognition vs. the ability to articulate specific words at a given time. As a country, we tend to vote on superficial reasons. I was a political science major during undergrad and there is a lot of research that the taller person and the person perceived to be more attractive wins elections This was back in 92 so I am not sure if the data still hold true. Something tells me we are more partisan than that now. A quick story about strokes is I have a high school friend who was also a health and physical education teacher at the school where I was superintendent. He had a massive stroke in school and only by the grace of God was able to drag himself out of the locker room where a student found him in the hallway. He had a prep period after the students left the locker room and he would have been alone for 45 minutes if he did not drag himself out of the room. This happened when he was in his early 40s and he still has not regained full use of all his limbs and speech is a struggle. This was about 5 years ago. With that being said, cognitively, he is fine. There is a piece in the New York times written by a neurologist who had a stroke. Recovery is often determined by the severity the stroke and the effort the person puts into rehab.

I have to concur with Y on this one, even without the effects of the stroke Oz would have had a better stage presence. TV has been his home for the last 20 plus years. Fetterman is not a newcomer to PA politics and has one statewide office. Oz has closed in, but I would be wary of the polling. Polling has been off the last few election cycles. The polls need to evolve with the electorate, and they have not.

I'm trying to keep an open mind about this. Yes  Fetterman is struggling. As much as I would like to see him and Dems win this, I have to put his health first. He should continue with his recovery and run again later. This is me taking all politics out, and looking at the human. Of course i would vote for him if I were in that state, but my vote would only be to deny Republicans. I'm sorry  this happened to him but if I had another choice...

???......Cap, the election is EXACTLY two weeks from today.  There are only two candidates vying for the Penn open senate seat. You can select either the Dem nominee, the Lt. Gov. who suffered a stroke six months ago, or, the MAGGAT nominee, a tv doctor who STRONGLY welcomes DJT's support.  There is no longer time for any hand wringing and political contortions.

Black folks in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and other urban centers in the commonwealth need to stop being LAZY an TRIFLING and freakin VOTE!!!  >:(

What did I say that isn't true?  Who told you only Oz and Fetterman are the only viable candidates. Oz lived in Jersey before he ran for the Senate.  Now he's viable.  Every person on the ballot is viable.

You really need to get out more.

There really isn’t a choice. I refuse to vote someone who not only does not live in state but is trying to buy the seat. He cannot represent me. The spelled his alleged address wrong.
