With their 13-10 upset victory on Saturday afternoon in Livingston, AL, the Tuskegee Golden Tigers (1-2, 0-0 SIAC), not only got their first victory of the season and first victory for new head coach/athletic director, Reginald Ruffin, the program picked up its 700th victory in its history. Tuskegee (700-385, .645) is the winningest HBCU football program in history, on all levels. TU's 700 victories rank only behind the 729 wins of Pittsburg State of the MIAA in NCAA Division II football history. Hillsdale College of the Great Midwest Conference is third on the all-time win list with 655 victories. Among HBCUs, Virginia State of the CIAA is 2nd in wins with 596. Entering the 2022 season, Tuskegee had the 3rd best winning percentage among HBCUs at .640, trailing only Grambling State and Tennessee State. The Golden Tigers 13 Black National Championships are 4th all-time, behind Tennessee State (16), Grambling (15), and Florida A&M (15).
To earn their 700th victory, Tuskegee won a tough defensive battle with West Alabama (2-1, 0-0 GSC). TU held UWA to 23 yards rushing and picked off one pass and forced six punts. West Alabama was 3-of-12 on third downs. The Golden Tigers, essentially, had a balanced offense, with 156 yards rushing and 152 yards passing. The Golden Tigers held the ball for 41:39.
Tuskegee opened the scoring with an Arnes Huskic field goal on their opening drive. West Alabama answered on their ensuing drive. UWA took the lead in the second quarter on a Tusker Melton to John Hilbert, 16-yard touchdown pass. Bryson Williams connected with Corey Petty on an 11-yard touchdown pass, at the end of the second quarter, to even the score at 10 going into halftime. Huskic nailed a field goal in the fourth quarter, for what would be the game winning points. West Alabama lead the all-time series 8-4.
Brief History of Tuskegee Football
The historic 700th victory belongs to Reginald Ruffin, which is his first at Tuskegee and his 66th overall as a head coach. Ruffin spent nine years as the head ball coach for SIAC rival Miles (MIles all-time winningest coach). Prior to Miles, Ruffin was the defensive coordinator and linebacker coach, for Tuskegee University from 2006-2010, for Tuskegee's second winningest coach: Willie Slater.
Willie Slater's 121-47 record (.720), in 16 seasons, places him second on the Tuskegee win list. Slater’s team accomplishments at Tuskegee include 5 Black College National Championships (2007 undisputed), 4 Pioneer Bowl appearances (2006, 2007, 2009, 2012), 4 NCAA Football Playoff appearances (2013, 2014, 2015 quarterfinals, 2016 2nd round), 7 SIAC Championships (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2017), and 9 SIAC West Division titles (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017).
