I have been to Edinburgh. I really liked it. I would have gone to London had time and finances allowed, but I would not make a special trip to go there. I am glad that I went to Paris, but I have no desire to go back. I thought that they were the rudest people that I have ever met. I really enjoyed Germany. I would go back there in a heartbeat.

President Barack Obama reveals Queen Elizabeth II ‘quietly’ invited his two daughters for tea at the palace

President Barack Obama publicly spoke about his experience with the late Queen Elizabeth II during an interview at the Inbound Conference. According to the 44th U.S President, meeting Her Majesty was a memorable event and something he was looking forward to.

Obama also said his mother-in-law and two daughters went to England for a vacation, and the Queen invited them to have tea at the palace. “The girls and my mother-in-law came through London probably my second year in office, and there was no expectation that they’re going to be seeing her,” he said. “Actually, Buckingham Palace reached out, and she decided to invite them over for tea.”

The politician and author said they never imagined that happening. “And so, I’ve got Malia, who at that point is eleven, Sasha who is eight, and my mother-in-law, who was a stay-at-home mom and a secretary for a bank —who lived on the south side of Chicago her whole life, sitting there with the Queen of England,” he said, adding Her Majesty wanted to treat them like royalty. “And then she insists that the girls take her golden carriage, which I guess she uses for jubilees, on a long drive through the Palace grounds. None of this was ever reported. It was just something that she did quietly.”

^^^its actually a bit deeper than just being the sidekick. Charles and Camilla have been kicking it for well over 40 years. They have only been married for 17 years, but gal is TRULY the love of dude’s life.

They were so close that they communicated throughout Charles engagement as a 32 year old man to 19 year old Diana. They even talked on Charles wedding day to Diana.

Sa what you want about dude, but he REALLY IS with the woman he loves.

This. Not to glorify his treatment of Diana but he wanted to marry Camilla all along. His family interfered really because she wasn't a virgin and was a party girl when she was younger. Also just a little trivia for you, she's Queen Consort which differs from Queen Regent. Elizabeth was Queen Regent meaning she was the sovereign and maintained head of state. If Camilla outlives Charles I believe she will move from being Queen Consort to Dowager Duchess because then Katherine will become the Queen Consort.

@Wildman I have a couple nerdy hobbies. One includes watching movies about Elizabethan and Victorian England. I also like documentaries explaining the different houses of the British monarchy. It's super interesting how this branch of the Windsors came to be the monarchs...and even that Windsor wasn't their name until 1917. Also that Queen Elizabeth II was the last monarch to marry a cousin. Her children married other nobles but far enough down that they weren't 2nd and 3rd cousins. My other nerdy hobby is learning about the political landscape of Germany from 1938-1945. Not just the WWII history but the actual politics of how it came to happen, the players, and how everyday people voted for it and became complicit in the atrocities that occurred. One day I want to travel to see the places from the documentaries.

Bfl......your humble poster is really intrigued with your interest/knowledge in the British Royal Family and with Deutschland from 1938-45. Those are both endlessly fascinating topics.  And Bfl is precisely on point when she stated earlier^^^that Charles wanted to marry Camilla DECADES ago, but his parents didn't think she was a suitable mate for the heir to the British crown.  So Camilla wound up marrying Andrew Parker-Bowles, with whom she had two children.  Well, guess who, among others, dated APB before he married Camilla?  None other than Charles sister, Anne, the Princess Royale. Not sure why THAT romance didn't take off, perhaps Bfl has some insights on that.  But we DO know that Anne is now on husband number 2, the first husband being the father of her two children.   Are y'all now getting some understanding why there is so much interest in those folks?  Who needs television dramas when you can observe the Royal Family and get the REAL DEAL.

That wall-to-wall coverage for three straight days was unnecessary. Not to say the media shouldn't report it, but damn that wasn't the only news story in the world.

@Strike from what I've seen in documentaries Anne and Charles are close. Though Anne never had to worry about being in line to be monarch. She always knew she'd be bumped for Charles children and grandchildren. The family is notoriously cold and I think Charles and Anne both desired a more loving home life (my opinion) and found it in their second spouses. The first spouse was who the family thought would be appropriate and dutiful. The second was for love. I also think the queen regretted not allowing her sister to marry the man she truly loved because he was a divorcee. So when it came to her children divorcing and her grandchildren marrying commoners, she was more accommodating.

All that said...the promise of being in those gilded prisons, following all those archaic rules like never eating seafood, having to wear pantyhose all the time, having to finish eating with the Queen/King is finished and other oddities is not appealing to me. While fascinating, I don't understand people willingly entering that life.

My interest in Deutschland (and the Weimar Republic post WWI, and the 2nd Reich in Namibia) initially began by watching the USC Shoah Foundation testimonials. It then became part of my understanding of what I see unfolding in our country. Imagining how people can vote for people who would systematically exterminate people was confusing for me. But finding out that no one really believed or anticipated how bad it got gives me chills. But I can see things going that way here.

Hey that is cool.   My nerdy skill is being able to name all 46 U.S. Presidents in order. If you give me a number between 1 and 46. I can tell you the name of the President, the predecessor, the successor and usually some historical tidbit concerning the particular President.

Bfl^^^yeah, Charles and Anne ARE close.  I think it has something to do with the fact that Elizabeth had those two children, in '48 and '50, respectively, then had Andrew sometime in early 60's and Edward in '66.  Charles and Anne were teenagers when Edward was born.  it is believed that Elizabeth got pregnant with the last two children so she could be more of a "traditional" mother than she was to Charles and Anne.  Charles has ALWAYS had a complicated relationship with both parents.  Anne was especially close to the father, Prince Philip, with her love of horses and all.

Btw, there has been quite a bit of discussion about Harry and Meghan's children being entitled to be called prince and princess, being the grandchildren of the sovereign.  But it depends on whether those two accept titles for their children.  Well, guess who rejected titles for HER children DECADES ago, that would be Anne.  They go by first name and last name, Philips, I believe.  And there is the issue of Harry apparently being denied the right to dress in military uniform for all the memorials for "Granny".  Well, the courtiers have declared, presumably with Charles blessings, that only "working royals" can wear military uniforms to the memorials and to the state funeral next Monday.  But although now disgraced for screwing around with teenaged girls, Andrew WILL be permitted to wear his dress uniform to "Mummy's" state funeral next Monday?  Why the exception for him over Harry, one might ask?  Well, its simple according to Buckingham Palace, it IS his mother we're talking about.  And, further, he is rumored to have been Mummy's favorite child.

And it goes on and on and on.........

And the other interesting tidbit is, had M&H kids not been titled, they'd have to bow to their cousins who are lower in rank to them (Andrew and Fergie's grandchildren). It was the optics for me. The "mixed" kids having to bow to their white cousins. I didn't like it. Andrew was his mum's favorite and everyone knows it. Everyone also knows why his relationship with Fergie didn't work now too....though interestingly enough she's been living with Andrew for years now.
