Whenever there's a coaching change, the new coach's upcoming record is all gonna depend on what the former coach left in the stable. when you combine that with whatever new recruits come in, that'll determine an upcoming record.

Simmons won 6 games in his first year. That is average! Simmons did better in his 2nd year because his type of his recruits was on his team that year. Wilson may struggle in his first year because he hasn't had time to recruit. Give Wilson two more years, and we may see MSU be a contender in the MEAC.
