Bowie’s Men and Women Eliminated, Lincoln Men eliminated, Lincoln Women the only Northern CIAA School remaining in the race.  Southern CIAA Schools remaining are Livingstone Men and Women, Winston Salem Men, Elizabeth City Women and Fayetteville State Men.  Charm City hopefully wishing these schools fans will travel to Baltimore.

Baltimore looks to lock down CIAA tournament for another 3 years

I think CIAA is going to renew. It was different but Baltimore was very welcoming. I've read some of the businesses near the arena wasn't as busy as they thought.

You can thank the pandemic for that. Some folks were probably still hesitant to venture to the restuarants.

That may be true but at the same time, some places were not ready. I stayed at the Holiday Inn across the street from Royal Farms where Fayetteville stayed and besides their lack of heat in the lobby, their restaurant was woefully understaffed. The bar in their lobby was not open as well. I think they know what to expect now, especially being that close to the arena. I will say the Marriot where WSSU was staying was much better. IT will take folks some time to know where to go. I think they will need to do something with the vendors as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed the CIAA in Baltimore. Baltimore really helped with shifting the focus back where it belongs, the actual tournament. The effects of COVID were still present but it a great crowd considering. The shuttle service that many of the restaurants were offering was a major plus.

The only semi-complaint I had and heard others express was in regards to the cleanliness of the arena; seating specifically. The chairs in Royal Farms definitely needed to have been cleaned months, if not years ago.

I was curious as to why alcohol was not allowed to be served during the tournament. I heard the announcer say that "per NCAA regulations, tobacco and alcohol were prohibited at the tournament site" however, there was a full bar in the VIP area and previous tournament sites have sold alcohol.

Congratulations FSU, I had no idea this has been 50 years in the making.

49 to be exact.

Watched the game with Daddy y.

You know I can't....... ;D

I remember the last one well.  Y'all worked us in the semis which cemented the "hate" between us.  We had stolen one in Fayetteville.  WE cheated in Winston.  They were the hot team that year.  I still see Tyus's determination, and Murchison's steady hand.......

Lincoln Claims CIAA Championship

From the moment this team learned of Young's untimely death, the 2021-22 Lincoln University women's basketball team had extra motivation to complete a task that the guard always had on her mind.

The top-seeded Lions brought home the school's first-ever Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship with the 67-52 victory over second-seeded Elizabeth City State University at the Royal Farms Arena.

From the opening tip CIAA Player of the Year Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) was on a mission that ended with 28 points, six rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals.

While Brown got the ball rolling it was fifth-year senior Joy Morton (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) who sparked the game-changing run. On the heels of Elizabeth City State taking the 22-21 lead with 4:45 remaining in the second quarter, knocked down two three-pointers and scored on a spinning layup during a 13-2 run giving the Lions the 34-24 halftime advantage.

The Vikings opened the third quarter with back-to-back three-pointers to pull to within four just 90 seconds into the period.

Then the Lions' defense regained its teeth, forcing Elizabeth City State in seven straight misses and three turnovers. By the time ECSU found the bottom of the back, the LU lead was back to 10 points. The Vikings were able to trim the deficit to four points heading into the fourth quarter.

But, Brown had an immediate answer with a three-point play, and then when ECSU got to within a single-possession Brown connected on a driving layup that sparked the game-sealing 20-8 run over the final seven minutes.

Morton finished with 12 points, while junior Jade Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends School) contributed 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Senior Chantel Cheeks chipped in with nine points and a pair of boards.

Brown was named the CIAA Tournament MVP and was joined by Young on the All-Tournament team.

Lincoln (22-7 overall) clinches the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament, and the Lions will learn its destination 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Lincoln women win CIAA Tournament title, finish business

Lincoln University may have an argument on its hands as to whether or not it was the first HBCU, but there’s no doubting this: it showed itself to be the top women’s squad at the CIAA Tournament.

LU managed to hold off and eventually separate from a tough Elizabeth City State squad for a 67-52 win and its first-ever CIAA Tournament title at Royal Farms Arena on Saturday evening. ECSU got off to a fast start, going up by seven with 6:02 left in the first quarter, but LU got back into form and took a 16-12 lead into the first quarter.

The two teams battled fiercely over the ensuing quarters, and ECSU managed to cut LU’s 10-point halftime lead to a 44-40 margin heading into the fourth quarter.

“We were a little bit flat at the start. It’s happened before. And we’re able to kind of work our way through that,” LU head coach Janice Washington said after the game. “And then I really, really was proud of the way that they closed out the game in the fourth quarter, you know, coming out that coming out of the third quarter, Elizabeth City hit two threes, real quick.

And at that point in time, our team chose we could have chosen to, you know, just give into that run or we could go on a run of our own. And so we did they score scored those two 3s  and six points very quickly and only scored six for the rest of that block.”

Senior and CIAA Player of the Year Bryanna Brown scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win. It was a full-circle moment for members of the Lincoln program who were on the previous edition of the squad that fell short two years ago in the quarterfinals.

“We all felt like we were just starring in a movie called Unfinished Business,” Brown said with a smile after game. “And, you know, it was a five-star from reading, until we completed it. We had a wonderful cast I just think it’s a blessing.”

Elizabeth City State completed the tournament with a 21-7 record and will await the NCAA Tournament selection show to see if it can get a bid to the Big Dance.

Lincoln, meanwhile, improves to 22-7 overall and earns the CIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

We played a good amount of teams in our non-conference that we would see potentially in the NCAA with the postseason,” Washington said.  “Our team looks totally different than we did in the fall semester. Their teams do as well.”

I did see on Twitter that the city of Charlotte sent a delegation to Baltimore.

Guess they miss the CIAA

When asked how the CIAA Tournament went, Mayor Brandon Scott gave the most authentically Baltimore analogy he could find.

“Like I’ve been saying all week, CIAA and Baltimore go together like Ole Bay and Crabs,” Scott told HBCU Gameday in an exclusive interview. “ To have this black excellence on display in this beautiful black city showcasing the great basketball, the wonderful institutions, the HBCUs, the student-athletes, having the alumni come out to support our black businesses here in Baltimore — its been a wonderful, wonderful time.”
