GC’s Gainous Gets Win 100 against #25 Miles, 71-66

December 3,2021

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Georgia College Men's Basketball (6-1) head coach Mark Gainous picked up his 100th career win Friday night, as the Bobcats upset No. 25 Miles College (6-1) 71-66 at the Columbus Classic.

A tight contest throughout, the game had 10 ties and 32 lead changes. The Bears cut the lead to a single possession with just over a minute left in the game at 69-66 after a three-point play.

The Bobcats missed a shot and then turned over the basketball with 40 seconds left. A miss by Miles was pulled down by Wesley Simpson (DeLand, Florida/Union Grove HS [Ga.]) with 18 ticks left, and the junior guard hit both free-throws to push it out of reach.

Senior guard Jordan Thomas (Conyers) led all scorers with 22 points, hitting 6-of-9 from long range. Simpson added a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, his first double-dip this season.

Sophomore Brandon Thomas (McDonough) posted 13 points, hitting three from long range along the way. Junior forward Chris Parks (Buford) rounded out the double-digit scorers with a season-high 11 points.

The Bobcats were out-shot overall 39 percent to 49 percent from the floor, but made up for that by hitting 12 threes, while the Bears made just four. GC had a 19-6 advantage in points-off-turnovers.

With the win, Gainous is 100-92 overall, the fourth winningest coach in program history. He's just 10 wins shy of Bill Hodges in third.

Jordan Thomas' 22 points give the senior 93 career double-digit scoring games, tying GC Hall of Famer Robert Williams (1977) for the most in school history.

The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, Dec. 4 at noon, finishing the Columbus Classic against Tuskegee University.
