Big 1st Quarter Leads UAB over Miles 72-52

BIRMINGHAM – Zakyia Weathersby's double-double of a game-high 15 points and 12 rebounds led UAB to a 72-52 victory over Miles College on Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
Margaret Whitley scored nine of her 11 points in the 1st quarter, Destinee McGhee had nine points and Maria Roters added eight points and seven rebounds for the Blazers (5-2), who remain undefeated at home.
Breah McGrady led Miles (6-1) with 12 points.
UAB led wire-to-wire and dominated the 1st quarter 26-9, converting 9-of-14 shots (64.3%). Whitley's 3-pointer at 6:49 gave the Blazers their first double-figure lead of the game at 15-3.
UAB's first half lead would get as high as 19 points after Weathersby opened up the 2nd quarter with a layup that made the score 28-9. The Bears would respond with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 10 points at the 4:33 mark. Jakera Ellerbee closed out the scoring sending the game into halftime with the Blazers ahead 36-25.
Weathersby's layup at 1:53 of the 3rd quarter gave UAB its first 20-point advantage at 52-32 and its lead would get a high as 23 points at 8:29 of the 4th quarter.
As a team, the Blazers outrebounded the Bears 45-36 and had 48 points in the paint to Miles' 22.
"We can always count on Kyia for a double-double," said head coach Randy Norton. "We're always pleased with her consistency that she has shown all season."
Weathersby has recorded a Conference USA-best six double-doubles this season.
Up next, UAB remains in Birmingham, but will travel to crosstown rival Samford next Sunday, Dec. 12. The Bulldogs (2-6) are coming off a 75-66 setback against Murray State and face Talladega (Dec. 6) and Alabama A&M (Dec. 9) before hosting the Blazers.
