Teen twice tried to rob Bessemer store: Clerk locked him out first time, locked him in on second try
A teen robbery suspect is behind bars after a Bessemer store clerk twice thwarted separate holdups, the first time by locking him out of the store and the second time by locking him inside the store, police said.
In the most recent attempt, police said, the 18-year-old tried to shoot his way out of the store, but to no avail. He was taken into custody without further incident.
The first robbery attempted happened Nov. 10 at the Rainbow Quick Stop on Hall Avenue in Bessemer.
Bessemer police Lt. Christian Clemons said it was about 7:15 p.m. that Wednesday when a customer spotted a male crossing the street, putting on a mask and carrying a gun.
The female store clerk locked the door before the suspect could get inside. He banged on the door several times, and then left empty handed.
Then, about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Clemons said, the same teen returned to the same store.
He entered the business brandishing a revolver and demanded money from the same cashier who had locked him out of the store two weeks ago.
When the cashier refused to open the register, police said, the suspect grab tobacco products, but didn’t get far. The cashier was able to lock him inside the store and notify police
While police were en route, Clemons said, the teen fired two shots at the door but was not able to get the door open.
When police arrived, the clerk unlocked the door and officers took the teen into custody without further incident. He was still in possession of the gun and the stolen cigars.
Police on Wednesday charged Janarius Horn, of Bessemer, with two counts of first-degree robbery, and one count of receiving stolen property. The latter charge is because police say he was armed with a stolen gun.
Horn will be booked into the Jefferson County Jail on cash bonds totaling $250,000s.
