I think one argument used to be because they don't offer athletic scholarships, but now that the PFL gets an autobid that argument shouldn't matter anymore.

I think the other argument they try to still say is to keep the student athletes from having to miss too many classes.  Ivy League teams only play 10 games and their season starts a few weeks after the rest of schools.  In basketball they used to not have a conference tournament, and now only have the top 4 teams play.

Students don't attend Ivy League schools to go pro or win national championships.  Atheletics is truly extracurricular.  They compete with each other.

All the answers here are correct. They saw early that if unchecked sports would have a detrimental effects of education. Can't speak for all the schools. Spartaneette can speak on this better with her being at Dartmouth. But Harvard doesn't have athletic dorms and  over forty sports teams the most in the NCAA. They want no line between student and student athletes. Also the on campus collegiate sports culture is huge like rugby , frisbee .etc.A $50B endowment doesn't hurt either.

It's probably financial. The FCS playoffs don't add anything financially or their image. I guess the Big Dance gives them a platform to expand their image and their coffers.

I don't even like my answer. I'm not sure why they participate in the NCAA Basketball Tournament.
