Olds..t & y04,

A question....

Y'all "dittoed" Neymar's plan. Later, he and I - despite our other differences - found common ground, so...

Do we have common ground,* also?

*That Neymar's plan would not have avoided the panic and the mass rush to the airport or any alternate departure point.

I realize y04 and Olds..t don't have the guts to express a viewpoint, and so they will remain silent.

I appreciate Neymar for engaging in the discussion.

So - no one is surprised - here is why I asked the question / posed the challenge.

I, too, was dismayed by the sad scramble of obviously terrified Afghans who "stormed" the airport.  Some were so desperate to escape Taliban rule that they held onto departing aircraft and fell to their deaths.

That is true desperation and extremely sad.

My contention is:
THERE WAS NO WAY TO AVOID "LAST MINUTE" PANIC.

Given all of the circumstances, IMO no amount of careful planning would have prevented some scenario just like or quite similar to what we witnessed.

What do y'all think?

Bison66, there was none,,, the military did the best they could under the situation/conditions given to them.
I look forward to read/review the "After Actions Report" by the boots on the ground "On-scene Commander".

Trump is berating Biden for not following his (Trump's) exit plan for Afghanistan.

What was Trump's exit plan? Run like hell. Blame somebody else.

blue72,

Those reports will be interesting - even allowing for a bit of CYA, which is to be expected.

Soflo,

#3TimeLoser45 berated #RealPresidentObama for giving a date for just decreasing troops, then #Erratictrump
- "negotiated with terrorsits",
- almost invited them to Camp David,
- signed a "capitulation" agreement with the Taliban (per H.R. Mcmaster, former general and #ErraticTrump's hand-picked Nat'l Security Adviser),
AND
- gave a date for a TOTAL WITHDRAWAL!!!

Olds..t,
All you got is BULLSHYT and name-calling!  And no guts!

Afghans reportedly escaped Kabul through a CIA gate so secret not even the Taliban knew it existed

(I'm not quite getting the headline, but...)

In the final 48 hours of the United States' evacuation from Afghanistan last month, many vulnerable Afghans who were not able to make it through Taliban checkpoints blocking access to Kabul's airport were still able to escape the country when the CIA opened a back door about two miles away from the main airport gates. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the gate, referred to as Glory Gate or Liberty Gate.

The entrance, which was so secretive that even the Taliban was unaware of its existence, was initially used to smuggle out the CIA's priority cases, like intelligence assets or local agents, but its role expanded as the clock wound down.

Sam Aronson, a political officer at the State Department, was on duty at Glory Gate in late August when several buses carrying Afghans who worked for the U.S. Embassy arrived without incident. So, he asked if they could also start ushering through families on the street who were on an evacuation waitlist, the Journal reports. He got the go ahead as long as he didn't "blow our gate," he told the Journal, and they completed the task successfully.

You avoid a last minute panic by not having last minute evacuations.

In survival class they taught the seven Ps of survival.

The proper, prior, preparation, prevents, piss, poor, performance.

This headline makes much more sense...

A Secret CIA Gate at Kabul Airport Became an Escape Path for Afghans

The entrance had various code names, including Glory Gate and Liberty Gate.

Biden admin folks had to sit qui8etly (keeping the secret) while GQPers ranted and raved.

y04,

Perhaps you missed this part from my Sept 6th post...

That assumes that beginning the evacuation would not have triggered the panic.

That's VERY far from a safe assumption.

Biden's plan was not "last minute," either - until the Afghan army laid down its arms, and the Afghan govt collapsed.  Almost EVERY analyst believed that weeks or months were still on the clock for an orderly evacuation.

However, as Bison4Life said, human behavior is not always predictable...

That post eventually led to Neymar and me finding "common ground."

They should have planned for the Afghan Army laying down their arms.  Everybody else knew The Taliban was gonna go through the Afghan Army like crap through a goose.
