In the wake of the Capitol insurrection on January 6th, nearly two hundred corporations and industry groups said they would pause or altogether stop making political contributions to the 147 members of Congress who voted against certifying the election and continue to propagate the Big Lie that led to the attack. In the months since, corporate and industry interests have had to choose whether to do their part to uphold our democracy by turning off the flow of corporate donations to these members, also known as the Sedition Caucus, or to continue to support them in order to seek political influence.

Many have failed this test, some reneging on a promise to change their giving while others made no commitment and are giving like nothing ever happened. By continuing to fund members of Congress who would undermine American democracy, these corporations and industry groups are sacrificing democratic government for access and influence. These members of Congress should renounce their votes against certifying the election and commit to respecting the 2020 election, future elections, and our democratic system, and corporations and industry groups should demand that they do so.

Whiteness is at the core of the insurrection

The answer to how the Capitol riots happened is right in front of us

By Fabiola Cineas  Jan 8, 2021, 6:40pm EST

A white man, a smug grin on his face, hauls off a congressional lectern. Another sports a gun at his waist and carries zip ties, as if prepared to take hostages. Yet another places his foot on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s desk before stealing a piece of her mail and leaving a handwritten note: “WE WILL NOT BACK DOWN.”

Feces smeared throughout a federal building. Blood on the marble bust of a former president. Nooses on Capitol Hill. These are the images captured on January 6 when an enraged pro-Trump mob of hundreds flooded the gates of the US Capitol, America’s fortress of democracy.

And what they show is a brazenness, a fearlessness, an entitlement to conquer and destroy. These Trump fanatics could do whatever they wanted, take whatever they wanted, and no one would dare to stop them.

Woman who flew to Capitol riot in private plane gets prison time

Real estate broker Jennifer Leigh Ryan was sentenced Thursday to 60 days in prison for her role in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The 51-year-old flew to the Capitol with a group of people from Denton, Texas, in a private plane and documented her involvement heavily on social media.

Ryan plead guilty to one count of "parading, demonstrating, or picketing in the Capitol building." She expressed remorse during sentencing, saying "this is not anything that remotely resembles who I am."

Judge Christopher Cooper emphasized that Ryan was prosecuted for her actions inside the Capitol, not her political beliefs.

Quote
"Your case has generated a fair amount of public interest," Cooper said Thursday. "And as a result, people will be interested to know what sentence you get. That sentence will tell them something about how the courts and how our country responded. And I think that the sentence should tell them that we take it seriously ... and that it should never happen again."

Some on this board are antithetical to the above quote from the esteemed Martin Luther King Jr, PhD

Quote
Americans had the opportunity to judge Donald J Trump by the content of his character back in November of 2016...
But many of us were instead disappointed to find out, that the content of the character of a broad swath of Americans
was noncontradictory to that of this misogynistic, malevolent pathological liar and sociopathic racist human being...
The Proof: 74 million voted for TRUMPS re-election after this low self-esteem, malcontent racist of a Homo sapien had
committed so many evil atrocities in a single term, while being coddled by a GOP lead Senate and GOP members of the
House of Representatives instead of being impeached and removed from office...

A psychopathic president's last act

Written By Alan D. Blotcky and Salon January 14, 2021

Donald Trump's attempted coup against our government was predictable. He had it all planned out. He would incite thousands of supporters to attack the Capitol, disrupt the proceedings of the Senate and find a way to maintain his grip on power. He knew full well that his violent insurrectionists had blood on their minds and that Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Mike Pence were in harm's way. He knew there was a chance that both Pelosi and Pence could be kidnapped or murdered. He did not care one whit. He was partying and celebrating as the attackers formed and began their deadly march. He was inciting an insurrection against the United States for his own personal gain. Democracy and human life were of no concern to him.

But his efforts failed. The Senate was not overtaken. Joe Biden was certified as the next president. Pelosi and Pence were both safe. The attackers are being hunted down one by one and arrested. Trump has now been impeached for the second time, with 10 Republican members of Congress joining with every Democrat. Pence apparently contemplated the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment (although he has now said he will not do so). The majority of Americans believe that Trump should be removed from office immediately for his treasonous behavior.

After last week's insurrection attempt, Trump is now trying to act as if nothing out of the ordinary happened. What is the big deal if some looters swarmed through the Capitol? As he has always done, Trump relies on lies, denials, conspiracy theories and fake bravado to skirt through life and through his presidency. But rhetoric and actions are observable truth. And Trump's clear incitement of insurrection means he is a traitor. It means he disavowed the will of the people and the rule of law. It means his personal gain is more important than the Constitution and his oath of office.

This all makes sense because Donald Trump is a psychopath. He is fueled by his narcissism, his sadism, his paranoia and his antisocial proclivities. We have been eager to ignore these things, but Trump's sadism and violence have been front and center in his psyche the entire time. This is the man who separated young children from their families at the border. This is the man whose inaction has killed 372,000 Americans due to the coronavirus. This is the man who has tried to encourage violence multiple times at his campaign and presidential pep rallies. And this is the man who glorified violence in Charlottesville and in other cities.

We should not be surprised that Trump's sadism and violence boiled over in response to his humiliating election defeat. He has been hell-bent on hanging onto power at any cost. He has been willing to throw anyone and anything under the bus to ensure his self-preservation and his survival. So a violent insurrection in the sacred halls of the Capitol was the perfect plan in his mind. A few deaths would be palatable, even entirely acceptable, if it meant he could remain in power.

Quote
What should now be clear to everyone is that Donald Trump does not love democracy or our country. He is an authoritarian. He wants absolute authority and control over people. He loves adulation. He is a greedy opportunist. He is a master of demagoguery. He is corrupt and criminal. He is a traitor of the highest order. He was virtually the worst possible person to become president because everything about him is antithetical to our nation's principles and ideals. Being president is so much more than being rich. Personal character, love of democracy and love of country are far more compelling attributes.

Trump is a cataclysmic problem that will be solved soon. He will be booted out, or simply leave. Social media platforms have banned him. Companies are halting their financial contributions to his party and his supporters. The PGA has pulled its 2022 championship tournament from his New Jersey golf course. More and more Americans are rejecting him by the day. His mantra as a traitor is beginning to take hold. Ultimately, it will be set in stone.

Mark Meadows used his private Gmail to pressure Georgia officials to overturn the 2020 election.

I expect the media to have the same outrage as they did with Hillary's emails, but I know they won't.

This judge may have just set a devastating precedent for Trump and his allies

https://www.alternet.org/2021/11/trump-allies/

A Colorado judge slapped two attorneys with a substantial penalty for pursuing Donald Trump's election lies in court, and provided a blueprint for punishing the twice-impeached one-term president's legal enablers.

Magistrate judge N. Reid Neureiter ordered attorneys Gary D. Fielder and Ernest John Walker to pay nearly $190,000 to the defendants they sued in baseless election fraud case over Trump's loss, and Los Angeles Times columnist Mark Barabak hailed the news as a victory for truth and democracy.

"Here's hoping the action by the U.S. district court judge sets a precedent that spreads widely through the land, as former President Trump and his enablers continue to push the 'Big Lie' of rampant voter fraud and seek to undermine the legitimacy of the current chief executive," Barabak wrote. "It's one thing to market that mendacity to fleece donors, salve the former president's velveteen ego or build an audience on Fox News, OAN or other Trumpaganda media outlets. Things are different in a court of law, and must be."

The pair's lawsuit, supposedly filed on behalf of 160 million voters, sketched out a vast conspiracy involving Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and the company Dominion Voting Systems to deprive Trump of another term in the White House, but Neureiter hauled the duo back into court after dismissing the case in April to consider possible sanctions for their actions.

"He asked if it occurred to the co-counsel — Walker, a former government lawyer; Fielder, a onetime local prosecutor — that they were being used by Trump to spread his self-serving propaganda?" Barabak wrote.

Fielder claimed they had a "good faith" belief that President Joe Biden had stolen the election, based on conspiracy theories from Trump and others, including MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, which the attorney described as "serious allegations made by serious people."

"While they were at it, Fielder and his co-counsel might have consulted the works of Dr. Seuss," Barabak wrote, "who had some interesting and authoritative things to say about Lorax and Sneetches, which would have held just as much water and benefit to their case."

Neureiter wasn't impressed by the duo's claims, and he took action against Fielder and Walker, just as other judges and legal authorities have against Trump allies who tried to overturn the election results in court -- including Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and Lin Wood.

"For that reason it's worth toasting Neureiter's decision to slap a price tag on the spread of Trump's Big Lie. Maybe dollars and cents will prove a deterrent," Barabak wrote. "Cheers."
