Former state Sen. Brent Waltz admitted in federal court  Monday that he participated in a scheme to funnel $40,500 in illegal contributions to his failed campaign for Congress in 2015.

Under an agreement with prosecutors, Waltz pleaded guilty to making and receiving conduit contributions and making false statements to the FBI. The plea agreement comes just one week before Waltz and John Keeler, another former lawmaker turned casino executive, were scheduled to go to trial.

Prosecutors say the illegal campaign contributions were fueled with cash from one of Indiana's largest casino operators, Centaur Gaming. To hide the true source of the contributions, the money was funneled through a Maryland political consultant under a sham consulting agreement. The consultant and Waltz then used that money to reimburse more than a dozen "straw donors" who contributed to Waltz's campaign for U.S. House, according to prosecutors.

Federal election law prohibits making or receiving donations in someone else's name and limits contributions to $2,900 per election.

The two charges each carry a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison, but Waltz is likely to receive significantly less time under the plea deal. Prosecutors agreed to recommend a sentence at the low end of the sentencing advisory range.

Waltz was initially charged with several other counts, but they will be dismissed as part of the plea agreement. Sentencing has not been scheduled yet.

It was not immediately clear what Waltz's plea agreement might mean for Keeler, whose trial is still scheduled to begin on April 18. The plea deal makes no mention of Waltz cooperating with prosecutors or testifying against Keeler.

An attorney for Keeler said his client plans to proceed to trial next week. Keeler has pleaded not guilty.

At the time of the campaign contributions, Keeler was vice president and general counsel for Centaur Gaming, the Indianapolis company that owned the state's two horse track-casinos in Anderson and Shelbyville.

Keeler, a former state representative, is accused of funneling nearly $80,000 from Centaur to a pair of companies controlled by Maryland political consultant Kelley Rogers. Prosecutors say the money was intended for Waltz's campaign.

To cover their tracks, Keeler and Rogers created fake consulting agreements to "provide monitoring of all presidential candidates" and "review racetrack betting facilities," prosecutors say.

In reality, Rogers used $29,000 to reimburse friends and associates who contributed the maximum allowable $2,700 to Waltz's congressional campaign, according to a grand jury indictment in 2020.

Rogers also paid Waltz an additional $16,500, most of which Waltz used to recruit and reimburse several additional straw donors. Rogers kept more than $30,000 as a fee for his services, the indictment says.

In all, Waltz's campaign received more than $40,500 in straw contributions.

During Monday's plea hearing, Waltz gave mostly one or two word answers in response to questions from Judge James R. Sweeney III. The Greenwood Republican's lengthiest statement came when the judge asked him how he pleaded.

"I plead guilty," he said.

In addition to the straw donor scheme, Waltz also admitted to lying to the FBI.

The plea agreement says Waltz told investigators the money was a retainer for Waltz's investment baking services. In reality, it was money he received from Rogers and used to reimburse family members and business associates for campaign contributions.

Waltz and his attorney, Russell A. Johnson, declined to take questions from IndyStar after Monday's hearing.

A viral video of a Texas student choking an Indian American peer has sparked a petition against the aggressor.

In a video circulating online, Shaan Pritmani can be seen being assaulted and choked by a white student in the cafeteria of Coppell Middle School in Texas on May 11.

The video begins with the aggressor choking Shaan with his right arm before demanding him to stand up from his seat.

“No, I’m not getting up,” Shaan replies. “There is literally no one sitting here.”

The student then presses his elbow on Shaan’s neck from behind before choking him once again while dragging him away from the seat. Other students surrounding the two can be heard cheering.

Witness Garrett Ziegler lashes out at J6 committee in white nationalist grievance rant

He thinks this is a game - Y-ite Privilege...

After invoking the Fifth Amendment and executive privilege more than 100 times to refuse to answer questions from the January 6th Committee on Tuesday, former White House aide Garrett Ziegler opened a livestream to vent his frustrations to his followers in a nearly 30-minute rant laden with white nationalist grievance on Telegram.

Ziegler complained that he has less resources to fight the committee than his older cohorts, including his boss former Trade Advisor Peter Navarro, who is suing the committee, and former White House strategist Steve Bannon, who is being prosecuted for contempt.

“They can pay their attorneys to go to trial,” Ziegler said. “I had to be very smart and circumspect. My goal was to avoid a contempt of Congress charge…. It’s going to be very, very hard for them to pass a contempt of Congress charge on me when I’ve given them documents, and I flew out to DC and sat in front of them. If they have a problem with me, they have a problem with the f***ing Fifth Amendment.

If they have a problem with me, they have a problem with the f***ing Fifth Amendment.

Citing his decision to invoke the Fifth Amendment to avoid self-incrimination, Ziegler portrayed himself as a victim of left-wing persecution.

“They’re Bolsheviks so they probably do hate the Fifth Amendment, and most white people in general,” he said. “This is a Bolshevist, anti-white campaign…. They see me as a young Christian who they can basically try to scare.”

Ziegler, who reshares white nationalist Nicholas Fuentes’ content and has called Cambodia a “s***hole country” on his Telegram channel, quickly added: “I’m the least racist person that many of you have ever met, by the way. I have no bigotry. I just try to see the world for where it is.”

Then, his rant veered into misogyny when he lamented that no one else in his generation was defying the January 6th committee, because “the other people in the White House are total hos and thots.” He specifically named Cassidy Hutchinson, the former aide to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows whose bombshell testimony revealed that President Trump wanted to let supporters with guns into the rally at the Ellipse, and Alyssa Farah Griffin, the former White House director of strategic communications and assistant to the president who reportedly showed up to support Hutchinson when she testified.

Ziegler reported that Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) logged in to the interview by teleconference, but ducked out when he realized he wasn’t going to learn any new information.

“It was a boring hour,” Ziegler said. It was an awkward hour. I loathe these people.”

While spurning the committee, Ziegler provided additional detail about his role in facilitating a heated meeting at the White House on Dec. 18, 2020 in which attorney Sidney Powell, retired Lt. General Michael Flynn and former Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne urged President Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act and order the National Guard to seize ballots and re-run the election.

“What I did is I sent them a URL to a form to fill out to then they can request to the Secret Service to be admitted onto the property,” Ziegler said on Tuesday. “That’s exactly what I did. I did nothing more. I wasn’t even at the White House grounds when that meeting occurred. I had gone home because it was very late at night. I had no idea what they were discussing. I hoped that — my reason for sending the URL to the form was that somebody would advise the president to make a call to governors to get the National Guard to hand-count the paper ballots. I had no idea about the machines.”

Previously, Ziegler has told fellow election denier David K. Clements that he and Patrick Weaver, another White House aide in the National Security Council, worked together to let Powell, Flynn and Byrne into the White House.

“Basically, I had the visitor access,” Ziegler said. “And he went down and got General Flynn and Sidney Powell.”

3 Arkansas cops suspended over arrest that sparked social-media outrage

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/3-arkansas-cops-suspended-over-arrest-that-sparked-social-media-outrage-01661133387?siteid=yhoof2

MULBERRY, Ark. — Three Arkansas law enforcement officers were suspended Sunday following social-media outrage over a video that seemingly showed two deputies and an officer striking a suspect under arrest.

Crawford County Sheriff Jimmy Damante issued a statement Sunday evening, stating two county deputies will be suspended during the course of the Arkansas state police’s investigation into the incident and the sheriff’s office’s internal investigation. A Mulberry police officer also was suspended.

“I hold all my employees accountable for their actions and will take appropriate measures in this matter,” Damante said.

In a statement released Sunday evening, Mulberry Police Chief Shannon Gregory said the officer involved in the incident is on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The city of Mulberry and the Mulberry police department takes these investigations very seriously,” Gregory said.
