Onnidan's Black Movie Hall of Fame
« on: April 03, 2021, 02:18:22 PM »
If there was a Hall of Fame for black movies, The Color Purple would be my nominee. What other movies would you nominate? We are not talking about the best movies but the iconic ones that will lead a discussion in the hair salon or barbershop.

I had to look Brian's Song up on Youtube. I remember seeing that when I was little.

....................................
Brian’s Song (Original)
???................uhhh, Brian’s Song is considered a “black movie”? I mean one of the protagonists (Gayles Sayers) is black, but pretty much everyone else is white, correct? Anyway, when Billy Dee Williams said at that banquet at the end of the movie, “I loved Brian Piccolo,” man a brutha gets teary-eyed everytime.

Anyway, peeps have already mentioned Sounder and Shaft, two of my absolute favorites, but no one has yet mentioned Love Jones, with Larenz Tate and Nis Long. Man, y’all trippin.

Strike -

Ya killing me Smalls....ya killing me....

Hell yeah I consider Brian Song a black movie solely based on the fact the Billie Dee Williams carried that whole movie IMO. So, when asked to include those I would consider, I did. The only notable exception on my list was Blazing Saddles, which I should have included originally.

I'm going to follow on Strike's question asking about these movies listed as "Black" movies

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

Imitation of Life - never saw the movie but reading the synopsis, I think the actor playing black isn't even black.

YOU REALLY NEED TO WATCH BOTH VERSIONS OF "IMITATION OF LIFE".  BOTH VERSIONS WERE YEARS AHEAD OF THEIR TIME.
