A list of self assigned percentages on make believe probabilities as listed above isn't an answer.  Hindsight, always 20-20, doesn't matter other than knowing where the conference can move  to enhance current affiliates positions.  Who to blame?

Hindsight looks back. The probabilities are looking forward. We can talk after it plays out. Better to be proactive and deal in reality than dig your heels into unlikely scenarios. Time will prove or disprove.

Wait for it.

The reality is with FAMU and BCU gone, the MEAC is in a better position.  Some of the other 'issues' can be fixed with some "elbow grease".

I'm cautiously optimistic, while you are pessimistic.  75% chance the conference scatters?  That's extremely high.

Risks and headwinds for the MEAC:

- ESPN changes the MEAC deal structure and terms of the Celebration Bowl or the TV deal for football and basketball games

- Inability to have fans in stands for football games this year and programs having to refund ESL and season ticket purchases

- Near term inability to attract new membership

- Long term limited corporate conference sponsorship (I.e. Coca Cola etc)

- Another team leaves the MEAC Conference

These risks have the potential to undermine the ongoing viability of the MEAC conference.

So, looking back in hindsight, do you all think the MEAC  should have kicked FAMU and BCU out of the conference a long time ago before Hampton and A&T departed the MEAC?

Punchy,
No I don’t think so. I think the MEAC should have looked at the MEAC schools and sports profile to determine what sports were needed and what school profile was required I.e. enrollment, budget, competing sports etc. (This exercise is conducted by other conferences today).

Also the MEAC should have redefined it’s geographical footprint based on the feedback from its members and determine which schools fall outside that footprint. Once that exercise was conducted the MEAC had a responsibility to assess the value of those schools outside the footprint and determine their schools ongoing membership (Businesses like GE sell off non-core or non-critical businesses to remain profitable).

These recommendations may seem cruel or without historical sensitivity, but the risks of not addressing these difficult business problems is too great to do nothing.

FYI

Morgan State University is the northern most member of the MEAC.  It's harder to get to Deleware State but Morgan State is farther north.

The consultants will look into some sort of merger of sorts between the A-Sun and the MEAC Football by 2023 that will likely include Tennessee State being invited to join the A-Sun in all sports, IMHO.

And schools like SC State and NCCU should not have to visit Morgan State, UMES, Delaware State and Howard back to back weeks. Those require multiple hotel stays and will have kids out of class from Friday, Monday, and Tuesday during the basketball conference season.

What should have been done sooner?

Alumni should be real fans and supporters of their institutions.  Why dont we give money and buy season tickets?  We should be real supporters of schools and programs.  Money helps to solve all programs.  We don't give money in good years.

As I was putting the MEAC members on Google Maps, it is really apparent that the MEAC is a DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia conference.

If we could pay for teams to travel and they were winning, we would not say a word.

MSU is closer, 4hr 47 min. and DSU 5h 32 min.
