Albany State football: Golden Rams look to slow down explosive Fort Valley offense

By Joe Whitfield joe.whitfield@albanyherald.com

Albany State quarterback Kelias Williams (12) looks to throw to a receiver during Saturday’s game against Morehouse at the Albany State Coliseum.

“This is what you hope for, this is going to be exciting,” said Albany State football coach Gabe Giardina. “A game with your biggest rival to decide the division title and the opportunity to host the conference championship. This is why you schedule your biggest rival for the end of the season.”

Albany State University has a ticket allotment that it must sell for the game or the university has to buy the tickets. Fans are urged to buy tickets in advance at Odyssey Records or the ASU bookstore or online at asugoldenrams.com. All tickets sold in Albany benefit Albany State University.

That is what is stake in Columbus. The Albany State Golden Rams (6-3.) will face the Fort Valley State Wildcats (6-3) in the 30th annual Fountain City Classic and the winner will be the SIAC East champions and host the conference championship against the winner of Miles College (7-2) versus Tuskegee (5-4).

Now Jaimac. :nono2: ;D head to your corner that you always send Yogi when he cut up.   :snicker :lmao: The Rams and Wildcats are fortunate because if Savannah State was eligible they would have clinched the East last week. But the SIAC Final Four is set and let's play ball. Go Golden Bears,Golden Tigers,Golden Rams, and FVSU the Golden Wildcats since they got some gold in their school colors. Everybody is Golden in this matchup. I love it. ;D

Fountain City Classic Returns This Weekend Major Bragging Rights On The Line

COLUMBUS, GA: The stage is set for one of the biggest HBCU games this weekend in Columbus. While bragging rights are on the line the opportunity to prove which team is truly the best in the SIAC will also be a stake as the Albany State Golden Rams and Fort Valley State Wildcats travel to Columbus with an identical record for the season.

Albany State University and Fort Valley will face off at the A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium in Columbus on Saturday, at 2:00 p.m. The annual rivalry which has called Columbus home since 1990 will return this year in what has become one of the biggest HBCU games in the state pumping millions into the local economy while also igniting Columbus' nightlife with numerous after-parties scheduled to take place at various venues across the city.

This year is a unique game as Albany State and Fort Valley both enter the game tied for the number two position in SIAC rankings. The teams both trail Savannah State by one game in their conference for the top position. Savannah State, Albany State, and Fort Valley State all carry a 6-3 record overall this year. However, ASU and FVSU have each suffered one conference loss each this season while Savannah State remains perfect in conference play.

If I were a AD, I would have never made the Tuskegee - Miles game my homecoming. There should be a good crowd regardless. I would look for two big paydays.

Mckinkey Habersham and Tracy Scott - the offensive threat for the Albany State Golden Rams

By Joe Whitfield joe.whitfield@albanyherald.com

People from all over the SIAC are talking about the Fort Valley offense because their passing game stands out from other SIAC teams with almost 3,000 passing yards, but what Albany State fans hope to show is that there are two special players on the Golden Ram team that can overshadow that passing game.

“It is really special to have both of these guys in the backfield,” said Albany State head coach Gabe Giardina. “Hand it off to number four or hand it off to number 22. They are both special runners.”

Number four is Mckinley Habersham, a senior from Savannah. Number 22 is junior Tracy Scott from Greenville, South Carolina. Both were named second team ALL-SIAC in the preseason awards and have lived up to that billing.
