This same article is true for most FCS conferences and mid to lower level FBS conferences. What this article doesn't point out are the financial benefits of having quality athletic programs, such as student enrollment. It a shame how the author doesn't mention how schools use athletic programs to increase total enrollment. The small 4-year school in my hometown LSUA is always increasing its student fees to add more athletic program. Although it is a part of the LSU System, LSU doesn't give the school a dime for its athletic programs, which means the students vote to pay for their own athletic programs through student fees. The school administration see this as a means of increasing the school's enrollment.
