anybody been watching the women's world cup?
« on: June 26, 2019, 05:22:50 PM »
man, the usa women pretty much "laughed" their way through the preliminary rounds, none of the games were close.  but then, they played spain the other day in their first single elimination game and they won 2-1, but quite frankly they should've loss.

the usa women scored both of their goals against spain by virtue of two "penalty kicks".  hey, don't get me wrong, i'm most definitely pulling for the usa women.  but i swear, i don't know what soccer game the referee was watching because i "honestly" didn't see an obvious foul committed by spain in the penalty box either time that the usa was awarded penalty kicks.

on her second penalty kick call, the referee even took several minutes to review video replay of her call and she could've reversed it, but she didn't.  and i swear, i was "floored" when she confirmed her original call!!

hey, it paid off for the usa women.  but it didn't feel good if usa fans are honest with themselves.  i'm glad the usa women won, but i don't like winning that way.  felt like spain got cheated out of that win, spain "legitimately" scored their only goal during regulation play.  usa only scored by virtue of 2 penalty kicks which have a very high probability of being successful, but they got "shutout" during regular play.

wow, i've never felt so bad about an usa world cup win than in that game...

They shut Chile out but even then, I thought that I saw problems in the play of their back line which could cause them trouble in the knockdown round.

Definitely some issues to address....but you have to learn to win ugly sometimes. Hopefully they'll be corrected before France.

As much as I love the game, there are some things that I never liked. At the highest levels, I think that deference is given to big names. Anyone here old enough to remember Maradona's handball goal?  As for the US Woman's team, Rapinoe is probably at least a half step slower than she once was and probably should be subbed or never played in the front line. I always taught my back line and goalie to 1. communicate with each other, 2. watch where the opposition players are before releasing the ball. At this level, you would not think that would be necessary.

Yup. Women's WC, Gold Cup, and Copa America. It's been a great month for futbol.

Me too.  The bench for the U.S. men looked very good last night against Panama in dominating possession.  They missed a bunch of scoring chances, but hopefully Altidore will brush off the rust... and that bicycle kick goal was rather sweet.  Just not used to seeing the men pass so well, but it's a welcome sight, and hopefully they can win it all.

The women are just so good though.  They just play a beautiful game.  However, they got a lucky break against Spain.  They should have lost that game the way they played, and never should have gotten that second penalty kick.  If they don't get it together and get back their focus, France is going to upset them.

Why would France beating them be an upset?

They are the hosts, have a much better all-around squad, and have not lost to them the last 3x they have played them.

France would be the overwhelming favorite if this wasnt played in US like heat tonight.

One thing I support Rapinoe stance against DJT. Good luck USA.

They didnt play too bad against Spain. They, and everybody else, didnt expect Spain to be as good as they were and they struggled. They wont take France that easy. I expect them to probably win by multiple goals. Its much hotter right now in France than people in non greece/Italy Europe are used to. Its like America level hot.

All right. I was wrong about Rapinoe. But with their unwritten rules and customs we might have all been wrong about the calls against Spain. One of those is you take them down before you let them score. But you make the takedown outside the penalty box. Otherwise if you don't clearly have the ball, you are likely to get a call.
