SU Legend Coach Otis Washington passes away

Otis "Coach Wash" Washington the most successful coach in the history of St. Augustine football and an icon throughout the state of Louisiana, passed away this morning, Friday, May 24, at the age of 80.


"On behalf of the entire St. Augustine High School community, we offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Otis Washington, whose legend and legacy have touched generations of Purple Knights," said Dr. Kenneth St. Charles, president and CEO of St. Augustine High School. "He was a passionate, innovative leader who helped establish the standard for St. Augustine athletics. Coach Wash shaped St. Augustine football into a program that reflects his dedication to discipline, teamwork, scholarship, and excellence both on and off the field. We celebrate his lifetime of accomplishment and his unwavering commitment to St. Augustine.”

Louisiana lost one of its coaching legends on Friday morning.

Otis Washington, who coached at St. Augustine High School, LSU and Southern University, died on Friday morning.

He is the reason why LSU was able to recruit the best Black football players in-state and redirecting that New Orleans pipeline back to Southern, which sat the stage for both schools successful run in the 90's and 2000's.  Nick Saban and Pete Richardson somewhat walked into a gold mine with both schools getting top recruits.

Today, Coach Otis Washington was remembered by former players, classmates, coaches and friends in New Orleans. 

His body was escorted by Louisiana State Police roundtrip between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. 

The funeral will be on Saturday, June 1, in Baton Rouge.

Rest in power, Coach.
