The road ahead for Bennett College

The next big date on Bennett’s calendar comes the week of Feb. 18. That’s when college leaders will appear at an appeals hearing in Atlanta. Here’s where things get complicated for anyone trying to follow this story: No matter what happens that week, Bennett will hold onto its accreditation for a while longer.

If Bennett makes a convincing case, the appeals board will send Bennett’s case back to the commission for reconsideration. That action would suggest that Bennett will keep its accreditation for the long term.

If Bennett loses its appeal, President Phyllis Dawkins says said the college will sue. Wheelan told me the commission has agreed in the past to extend a school's accreditation for a year to give the legal process a chance to work out and to let a college figure out a Plan B.

So what is Bennett’s Plan B? Here are a few of the forks in the road ahead for Bennett if it loses its appeal next month.

B. Grounds for an appeal of the SACSCOC Board of Trustees’ decision are limited to the following:

1. that the Board failed to follow its procedures and that this failure was significant in leading to the decision

2. that the Board's decision was arbitrary, that is, was unreasonable and not based on, or consistent with, the published Principles of Accreditation or policies of the Commission.

The request of an institution for an appeals hearing must identify the specific alleged procedural failures or the specific manner in which the decision was arbitrary, that is, was unreasonable and not based on, or consistent with, the published Principles of Accreditation or policies of the Commission.

If an institution has been removed from accreditation based solely on finances, it can make available to the Appeals Committee new and verifiable financial information that is material to the Board’s adverse decision.

C. An institution requesting an appeals hearing shall, at the time of the request, pay the treasurer of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges a deposit of $15,000 to cover the travel, lodging, meal and other charges incurred by the Hearing Officer and by convening the Appeals Committee. If the expenses incurred exceed the deposit, the institution will be assessed the additional amount. If expenses are less, then the difference will be refunded to the institution.
