Several VA privates schools have formed a 8-man football league
Virginia High School League is for the first time investigating 8-man football for its members

What has happened to contribute to this decline?

All ya'll are wrong. The main reason participation has declined is that kids are too lazy to go outdoors and play. They would rather play video games or look at TV. This just the begging, they also can't communicate with each other face to face. They call texting a person as being a date.

How do you explain the surge in participation in other sports then?

That surge is not black kids, but Hispanics and Whites. The only reason we are so good at football, basketball and track, was because we use to do it all the time in the hood. They did not require nothing but a cheep ball and our bodies. We don't swim, play lacrosse, nor play  baseball.

Not at Peach County High School in Fort Valley, Ga.

Facts.  Trojan football will always be king around these parts.

I’d be interested in the demographic locations where this is mainly happening.   If I had to guess, I’d say this happens more in larger, more northern areas.

The decline in small town USA in the Deep South probably has seen the lowest decline.   Just a guess though.

I love football - I mean absolutely love it, but I would steer any young athlete into basketball or baseball over football -  less wear and tear on your body, lower chance of concussion, a higher salary, and ALL of your money is guaranteed.  Baseball can be a gold mine if you’re any good at it - problem is it can be super expensive which deters a lot of our kids.

Also many students get suspended so much, they are not eligible to play.

As EPjr stated, here in the DMV the high school he speaks about is out in Loudon County. One of my coworkers, that's white, mentioned to me about her sons not interested in playing varsity football. She stated that the high school doesn't have a football team period and they don't know if it will come back. Mind you, this is one of the largest high schools in the county. I was shocked when she told me this.

that's all...     :tiptoe:

People are aware of the long term effects of playing football and they don't want their sons brains to be like scrambled eggs when they are grown. If I had a son I wouldn't want him to play either.

America is still a very segregated country. There are clearly mostly black neighborhoods in every town in this country. My statement of "hood" is any black neighborhood, regardless of income in that hood. And we don't play those sports in large enough numbers to say "we do that".
