Those kids aren’t on scholarship thus the reason for the abysmal on field performance. As much as I don’t like this, it’s the right decision.

A sound move for Cheyney. I'm just glad they are still open.

D2 would be better for a HBCU

Its a bad move. About 150 kids are at Cheyney because of football. Thats rostered and non rostered kids paying full tuition one way or another. Because Cheyney does not invest in football, it is the one program that brings in the funds to cover staff, football operating budget and the 4 scholarships.

With 700 students at the school why shun 150 of them if you need students.

Cheyney wont be a school in 10 years.

Looking at the financials, and the expected rate of the economy, it just wont be around.

The dropping of the football team, while a good move, isnt enough to steady the titanic. DePasquale said this years ago, after releasing the financials, and people laughed. Now the enrollment keeps dropping, the debt keeps rising, and the situation gets worse.

I know of a few other HBCUs that should also consider dropping football but...

Cheney might want to talk to the President at Paul Quinn for answers to thrive without football. I know they are in totally Geographical / Climate regions, but He may be able to help... Football at Cheney years ago should've been done away with like Shawnand St. Aug were for Decades. Basketball and other sports only is Not bad at  Cheney.

Definitely. This is a public school with LESS THAN 1,000 students and I cannot understand why. Cheyney is our oldest [some debate it] HBCU. I never understood why the school doesn't market itself to increae enrollment. Very sad. I hope she bounces back, with or without football. There are several smaller hbcu's operating without football, Wiley College, Philander Smith, Oakwood, Fisk...but Cheyney is the only public hbcu with such a small enrollment. Does the state of Pennsylvania want Cheyney to close?

I agree! Their operating budget is $47000 for football and their scholarships were $104,000. With salaries they weren’t spending more than $300,000 for football. Each student is worth $12,500 to Cheyney. If they have 80 players that’s $1,000,000. After the $300,000 they spend on footballl, Cheyney makes $700,000 off tuition revenue. Not smart to drop football....smdh. Small college football makes money off tuition....not the gate in football. It didn’t matter if they won a game, as long as they had 80 players, you make $700,000.
