Duer Sharp is resigning as commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), sources close to the situation told HBCU Sports on Wednesday.
According to sources, Sharp learned that his current contract, which runs through July 2018, would not be renewed by the SWAC Council of Presidents
The conference presidents are scheduled to meet in Houston Thursday during the SWAC’s annual winter meetings; sources tell HBCU Sports.
Sources indicated the presidents would discuss whether to allow Sharp to work out the remaining months on his contract as the commissioner or to buy him out and remove him from the position as soon as possible.
Sharp joined the SWAC as assistant commissioner in Jan. 2004 and was named associate commissioner in June 2005

For their front office to stop over spending. There is no reason why the conference should be running a deficit as large as they are.

what is the SWAC Council of Presidents issue with him?

If I had to guess it would be that he let Grambling folks talk him into dropping the SCG, because when they participated in the SCG attendance went down.

It was well known that their fans complain about having to play both games back to back saying that it was too expensive. 

It just made no sense when you saw the raw numbers when alcorn, JSU, and SU were in it, and the fact that the city of Houston was in complete full support of it.

I also believe he was trying to cover the fact that since it moved to Houston, he was unable to get any more major sponsor on board in one of America's largest sports market.

That's purely speculation on my part.

Well look like I was partially right.



Duer Sharp is resigning as the SWAC’s Commissioner, as first reported by HBCU Sports.  The report cites sources that say that the SWAC’s Council of Presidents and Chancellors decided not to renew his contract, which was slated to end in July 2018.  HBCU Gameday has independently verified Sharp’s resignation with sources close to the situation.

HBCU Gameday has also learned that a push is taking place to try and revive the SWAC Football Championship, something the Council would have to approve.  The football championship game is slated to end with this weekend’s matchup of Grambling versus Alcorn State.
