Okay.  The Wildcats are a team w' mostly Freshmen.  We increased the scholarships from 3 to 5.  Those 2 extra scholarships allowed us to defeat Benedict and Lane.

No Cletus, and here’s why:

You beat TU and Miles, BUT YOU ALSO LOST TO CLARK AND BENEDICT (at home I might add).  That doesn’t make you a true champ.

And yeah we do have a young team with limited scholarships - that’s not an excuse, that’s a fact - and it’s one that we don’t beat people over the head with either.

Bless your lil billy goat heart - we will work on colors tomorrow ok? :)

We didn’t start a thread because we are about ACTION not tongue twisting bruh.  The goal is to get better at the end of the year and that’s all we are trying to do.  The showdown before sundown will tell the story.  See ya Saturday.

For this first time since the SIAC Championship game has been played, the FCC outcome has no bearings on either team, so that excitement that usually is there is not there.

I am trying to get to the Bulldogs vs Gamecocks "between the hedges" in Athens. :tiptoe:

I have not been to a FCC since 2012...

Albany State, Fort Valley State prepare for Fountain City Classic

Kevin Porter, head coach of the Fort Valley State Wildcats and Gabe Giardina, head coach of the Albany State Golden Rams, shake hands at the Fountain City Classic Media/Coaches Luncheon Tuesday, October 31, 2017 Special to the Ledger-Enquirer\Darrell Roaden

BY JORDAN D. HILL
jhill@ledger-enquirer.com

OCTOBER 31, 2017 5:10 PM

As Albany State head coach Gabe Giardina spoke at a joint press conference about Saturday’s Fountain City Classic, Fort Valley State head coach Kevin Porter was having flashbacks.

Giardina, in the midst of his first season as Golden Rams head coach, shared stories of meeting alums and quickly hearing how important it was to beat Fort Valley State. As he sat to Giardina’s right, Porter could fully relate to the rivalry’s priority for all involved.

“One of the first things (our alums) said was, ‘Hey, we’re glad you’re the new coach. Beat (Albany),’” said Porter, now in his second season at Fort Valley State. “I continue to get it. It’s a big game to our supporters and in our community, and it’s great to come to Columbus and play it at a neutral site.”

Porter and Giardina will be on opposite sidelines when Fort Valley State and Albany State face off at 2 p.m. Saturday in Columbus’ A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium. Saturday’s meeting — which is the 28th held in Columbus — will give one side historic bragging rights, as the rivalry’s record stands at 33-33-3. :o :o

For Porter’s Wildcats, a victory Saturday would be the exclamation point on a strong regular season.

Fort Valley State (5-3, 5-0) has won its last four games, with last Saturday’s victory over Morehouse College clinching the Eastern division of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The team already knows it will host the SIAC Championship Game Nov. 11, but it must handle a pesky rival first.

Porter said maintaining focus this week in practice will be important, and the rivalry’s priority with all involved should help with that challenge.

“We try to do a good job of educating our kids on the history of the game and making sure they understand what the game means to both sides,” Porter said. “I think (having a rivalry game Saturday) is one of the things that will help get our team get ready to play.”

Sophomore defensive lineman Roderick Branscomb is among those Porter is counting on to slow Albany State (5-4, 3-2) and the Rams’ option attack. As a Carver High School alum, Branscomb said he grew up watching this game and takes great pride in now playing it.

“We know the stakes and we know what to play for,” Branscomb said. “We’ve played great so far, and (beating Albany State) would add something else that would give us more motivation for next week.”

Albany State has controlled this rivalry as of late, winning 13 of the last 17 meetings.   :tongue2: In order to pull out the victory, Giardina stressed the importance of running the ball well and thwarting the Wildcats’ attempts to do the same.

The Golden Rams have five players on their roster from Columbus, including senior linebacker Emmanuel Brown. Like Branscomb, the former Kendrick Cherokee cherishes playing in front of his home crowd, with the rivalry’s intensity only fanning that fire.

Brown wouldn’t argue that the Golden Rams’ current two-game losing streak was not what they had in mind. A win Saturday, however, would give Brown and the other Albany State seniors the send-off they’re looking for.

“Everything happens for a reason. Now my last game is on my home field I started on,” Brown said. “It would mean everything if we could get this win.”

Fountain City Classic is much more than just a great football game

BY LARRY GIERER
lgierer@ledger-enquirer.com

OCTOBER 31, 2017 1:51 PM

Ever since the rivalry football game between Fort Valley State University and Albany State University moved to Columbus in 1990 and became the Fountain City Classic, Calvin Smyre has been the event’s chairman.

“I love it,” said Smyre, who represents District 135 in the Georgia House. “This is something I do from the heart.”

The 28th annual meeting is Saturday at 2 p.m. in A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

“This is more than just a football game,” Smyre said. “It brings the proud alumni and supporters from both schools together for a fun time that raises needed funds for the athletic programs at both schools. It is money that could not be raised with the teams playing at one of the school’s home fields. The ability to get more corporate sponsorships is why the game moved here.”

Money is also raised for scholarships so students may attend one of the schools. The event is used as a recruiting tool for both.

A graduate of Fort Valley State, Smyre said the game is beneficial to the city.

“It is a boost to the Columbus economy,” he said. “Thousands come into town during the week and spend money.”

The two teams have been playing since 1945.

This year, Fort Valley brings a 5-3 record into the game while Albany State comes in at 5-4.

Smyre said Fort Valley has already clinched a spot in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Game.

“These programs are used to playing for championships,” he said.

But there is so much more than just the game.

More than 60 vendors are expected outside the stadium Friday night and Saturday, providing a variety of wares, food and entertainment.

“There are thousands who come just to tailgate. It is just great,” Smyre said.

There will also be vendors at the Columbus Convention & Trade Center Friday night and Saturday night.

There are numerous activities planned during the week.
