Tuskegee needed overtime last week, but defeated Morehouse 23-17 in Columbus, Georgia. Tuskegee kicker Dalton Hall kicked a 23-yard field goal as time expired in regulation. In overtime, Jamarcus Ezell ended the game with a 3-yard scoring run. Tuskegee will look for its third straight win as it takes on Jackson State in Mobile on Saturday. ... Jackson State is coming off a 38-9 loss to Alcorn State on Sept. 30. Jackson State amassed only 225 total yards. Jackson State is off to its worst start since 1968, which was also 0-5. ... Tuskegee took a 20-17 win over Florida A&M in the inaugural edition of the 5th Quarter Classic. Tuskegee quarterback Kevin Lacey hit receiver Desmond Reece on a 23-yard touchdown pass with 2:14 left. ... Tuskegee remains the SIAC's worst total offense (213.7 yards per game) and scoring offense (17 points per game).

Most coaches like to talk up their upcoming opponent, no matter how good they think they are or what they expect to happen on game day.

Alabama coach Nick Saban talked about Ole Miss like they were primed for an upset. He called them an explosive offensive team with a great passing game, and said the Rebels were playing a lot better on defense — aggressive and physical.

Then the Tide rolled to a 66-3 win.

It's just what coaches do. If their team wins, it makes the fans feel that much better about a victory. If they lose, he can always so "I told you so."

But Tony Hughes isn't just blowing smoke when he says Division-II foe Tuskegee is going to give Jackson State all they can handle this Saturday in Mobile.

"This is not a typical Division-II opponent we're going down there to play this Saturday," Hughes said. "This is going to be a phenomenal challenge."

Tuskegee (4-2) is off to a 3-0 start in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and they present problems for the Tigers (0-5) on defense.

Just ask Alabama State, who hosted coach Willie Slater and his Golden Tigers in their season opener and suffered a 14-6 loss.

Tuskegee is only giving up 23.8 points a game, and that's with a 61-0 loss to D-II power Findlay University. Take out that game, and they're only giving up 16.4.

Their front line is led by senior Terrence Leatherwood, who has three sacks. Their secondary features Jonah McCutcheon, a senior all-conference safety out of B.C. Rain High School in Mobile who already has a couple of interceptions.




Senior linebacker Osband Thompson is an All-American who can line up upright or with his hand in the dirt. He ranks second nationally with 87 tackles in five games.

This does not bode well for the Tigers, who rank eighth in the SWAC in average total offense (228 yards a game) and have scored just eight touchdowns in five games with a minus-seven turnover margin.

"They are really, really solid on defense, as you'd expect a Willie Slater-coached team to be," Hughes said. "They've got the two best defensive ends we've faced since Tennessee State, so there's no question it's going to be a tremendous challenge.

"But nobody is going to feel sorry for us."

The good news for Jackson State is that the Tigers are relatively healthy coming off a bye week. They have every starter available with the exception of freshman center Vincent Hunter, who is out for the year after undergoing knee surgery.

The Tiger coaching staff has spent the last two weeks trimming the playbook down to what has worked, according to offensive coordinator Chad Germany, and Hughes said Tuesday the team's last three practices have been the best ones of the season.

"It’s been excellent," Hughes said. "The kids have worked hard. They haven't given up or quit, and they are still responding in a positive way. We just have to keep believing in what we’re doing and put them in the best position to be successful."
