Wichita State leaving MVC for AAC on July 1

By PAT EATON-ROBB
AP Sports Writer

Wichita State has accepted an invitation to join the American Athletic Conference.

Conference spokesman Bill Potter says the presidents of the conference's 12 member schools voted unanimously Friday to admit the school in all sports but football and the school accepted the invitation.

The school, which is currently a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, does not have a football program but it is a powerhouse in men's basketball.

It will officially join the league on July 1.

The AAC currently has 12 members for football: UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, Navy, SMU, South Florida, Temple, Tulane and Tulsa. Navy is a football-only school, so the Shockers would give the conference 12 members in both football and basketball.

The school did not have an immediate comment. Messages also were left seeking comment from the Missouri Valley Conference.

wichita state is one of the very few existing aac schools that wasn't a former member of conference usa. with the exception of wichita state, uconn, temple, and navy, the aac is nothing more than an old version of conference usa.

the old conference usa is now the new aac. almost the same schools except a new conference name...

Conference USA still exists

AAC grew from the breakup of the Ole Big East. The basketball schools kept the name and the football schools became The American AC

Possible restructuring in the OVC. Apparently they are looking at Valpo, Belmont & Murray St.

That's not called a restructuring that's called a raid if it's still left standing a hostile takeover if it's not.

MVC can have Murray St. I only care about Belmont.

N Kentucky wants in the OVC and N AL at one point was begging to get in.

I would swap Kennesaw St for Murray in a heart beat...

Lipscomb basketball will probably get added if the OVC can get Kennesaw.

The MVC (Missouri Valley Conference) only got one team in the NCAA tournament.  Illinois State finished tied for first place with Wichita State.  They won a school record 27 games (27 - 6) after losing the MVC championship game to Wichita State.  If WSU had lost they may have been left out of the NCAA.  I think WSU wants to be in a conference that gets more than one team in the Big Dance.

That's all fine and dandy  but this is the reality of what is going on in the OVC.

This is what I'm hearing.  Jacksonville State is upset that North Alabama didn't get an invite after they lobbied hard for them to get in, they were also upset about the conference letting in-state rival Samford leave for the SoCon. Several schools are upset at TNSU being able to schedule one less conference game. And Southeast Missouri has been threatening to leave for the Missouri Valley for a few years.

SEMO is not going anywhere because no else wants them.

OVC knows what TNSU brings to the table therefore we are allowed to do what we do...

JXSU has a legitimate beef but the OVC told TUNA to get their facilities up to par. JXSU is not going anywhere soon because they currently enjoy being the big dog in football.

Not being funny but just what is it that you bring to the table to a conference that was already eestablish?

They already travel to Tulsa  Would likely just be part of that road trip
