Playoffs feel like consolation prize for N.C. A&T in Celebration Bowl era

November 25, 2016
By Jeff Mills

Once upon a time, two short years ago, this was the ultimate goal.

N.C. A&T would start the season on a quest to get to the FCS playoffs and compete in a 24-team football tournament to win a national title.

The Aggies made it. They’re back in the playoffs for the first time in 13 years. No. 17 A&T (9-2) will play at No. 12 Richmond (8-3) at 2 p.m. today in the first round of the NCAA Division I Football Championships.

It’s the Aggies fifth appearance in the FCS playoffs and their first at-large berth.
And yet, somehow it feels like getting socks for Christmas. You appreciate the gift, but it’s not what you really wanted.

That’s because a funny thing happened in 2014 when ESPN negotiated the deal for a made-for-TV postseason game matching the champions of the MEAC and SWAC.

The Celebration Bowl became a priority. It’s the priority in black college football.

A chance to play for a national championship is not a consolation prize.  Only a loser would  think that.

The Celebration Bowl should be between highest ranking teams from both conferences that were not selected to play in the FCS Playoffs.

Let's not start this again. The Celebration Bowl is priority #1 for the MEAC  and the playoffs is priority #2 for the runner-up  and other conference teams.

*Grambling would have beaten us even worse had we made it to the CB.

No way I would want to be A&T in playoffs getting beat down for cost and poor exposure than NCCU in Celebration Bowl for handsome pay and incredible national exposure. :tiptoe:

I have never understood this attendance argument. If attendance was so important , why aren't our schools better. And i'm sure your going to match attendance with money... But at the same time our schools are underfunded and majority don't have the support staff to keep us out of NCAA issues concerning APR

Grambling is better a whole lot better- Southern is still a very young team that was picked to finish 3rd in their division-- Grambling would have beat Arizona- if Kincade would not have been injured in the 2nd quarter.

Simple answer, which you probably won't accept, attendance increases your brand, which can lead to possibly more/better national TV exposure and large sponsorships which leads to more money for your program.  Exposure can lead to increased enrollment.  Hopefully this exposure leads to alumni support as well.  Without Challenge and CB MEAC TV appearance 7 the SWAC 12.   Got to believe attendance had something to do with it.

In all  sincerity and not being a smart a** . You don't understand a lot of things because you always tend to take the wrong prospective look too rationalize your position.  Where and who EVER said anything about attendance being a measure of production or quality of football?

I'll tell you.   NOWHERE AND NOBODY ever did.   The point was and always has been the measure of interest or more accurate the measure of lack of interest.

It is good to be in the running for both the Celebration Bowl and an At-Large bid to the playoffs.  It seems like a lifetime ago when we couldn't buy a game.
