FCS review: Now, probably never for the disappointing

By CRAIG HALEY
STATS FCS Senior Editor

(STATS) -
As the middle of the FCS regular season arrives, a whopping seven teams that were nationally ranked in the preseason are floundering under losing records.

It's now, but probably never for most of them as far as gaining an FCS playoff bid.

The most promising situation belongs to Northern Iowa (2-3, 1-1 Missouri Valley), which was ranked fifth in the preseason. The problem for the talented Panthers is it that four of their remaining six conference opponents are ranked in the Top 15 (Youngstown State, North Dakota State, Western Illinois and South Dakota State).

But UNI played such a tough non-conference schedule and had a win over an FBS opponent (Iowa State) that even a 6-5 record may land it an at-large bid - like Western Illinois last year.

An at-large bid is unlikely for defending Patriot League champion and preseason No. 21 Colgate (1-4, 0-1), which is reeling with a three-game losing streak. It needs help to gain the league's automatic bid again, the best bet in a seven-team league likely being a tie for the league title. But it can't be a two-way share with Lehigh, which won the head-to-head matchup.

At this point, a winning record is probably the best scenario for William & Mary (2-4, 0-3 CAA), which was No. 9 in the preseason; Illinois State (2-4, 0-3 Missouri Valley), No. 10; Portland State (2-4, 1-2 Big Sky), No. 17; Northern Arizona (2-4, 1-2 Big Sky), No. 18; and Towson (1-4, 0-3 CAA), No. 24.

High expectations bring a lot of pressure to teams. Sometimes too much.

i really don’t get excited about polls anymore because its “meaningless” for a conference that doesn’t even participate in the playoffs.  sure, the polls are kool for the “fans”, but very little else.

it cracks me up every time i see folk (who advocated bypassing the playoffs for the cb) complain about the polls because their school isn’t ranked or not ranked high enough for their satisfaction.  i’m like, why should they even care about any poll except “hbcu polls”?  its as if they want to be viewed amongst the top fcs teams in the nation “artificially” by the polls, but they don’t wanna prove their ranking in the playoffs.

i mean, they’re quick to admit that they can’t compete in the playoffs which takes the “top 24 fcs teams”, instead they prefer the cb.  yet, they’ll turn right around and get mad if their school isn’t ranked in the top 25 or not ranked high enough in their opinion.  you wanna quit the playoffs because you can’t win any playoff games, yet you wanna be ranked in the top 25?  just doesn’t make sense to me...

The polls is a good representation on what other similar schools think of you. Right now they think ya'll are among the elit. This is good news especially since you can't make the playoffs.

I am happy that the rest of the country looks up at ya'll. Great job!

I could careless about these opinion polls. As an Aggie fan I want to win the conference advance to the Celebration Bowl and win.

It's my hope that one day in the MEAC we can win our division...advance to the championship game...and from there win the Celebration Bowl.

If the MEAC adds a 12th football playing school we would go to divisions and then have a championship game.

If A&T continues to move up in the polls and NCCU continues to get votes or even get in the top 25 then when NCCU beats A&T at the end of the season to win the MEAC outright then A&T may have a shot at going to the playoffs.   NCCU will go to the Celebration Bowl.

Nah, slop...y'all can have the playoffs. We would rather make another trip to the Celebration Bowl. Who wants a ticket to some small town in the middle of no where with no payout or national exposure?
