NORFOLK, Va. (July 29, 2016) –
A majority of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference coaches and sports information directors predicted the North Carolina A&T football team will win their third straight (#onthechas3) MEAC title at the end of the 2016 season at the MEAC’s annual press luncheon at the Waterside Marriott on Friday.
In addition, the same group voted Aggies running back Tarik Cohen (5-6, 179, SR, Bunn, N.C.) the preseason offensive player of the year. It marked the second straight year Cohen has received the preseason honor. If he wins the postseason honor, it will be his third straight offensive player of the year award.
Cohen was also named preseason first-team All-MEAC at the luncheon along with Aggies return specialist Khris Gardin (5-7, 164, JR, Morganton, N.C.), offensive left tackle Brandon Parker (6-7, 299, R-JR, Kannapolis, N.C.), defensive tackle Marquis Ragland (6-3, 277, R-SR, Fayetteville, N.C.), defensive end Angelo Keyes (6-1, 270, R-SR, Kinston, N.C.) and placekicker Cody Jones (5-11, 141, SR, Gastonia, N.C.)
Wide receiver Denzel Keyes (6-4, 215, SR, Kinston, N.C.), right tackle Marcus Pettiford (6-3, 269, SO, Durham, N.C.), linebacker Marcus Albert (5-10, 207, R-JR, College Park, Ga.), safety Zerius Lockhart (5-10, 175, JR, Auburn, Ga.) were second-team selections. Center Darriel Mack (6-2, 291, R-JR, Clio, S.C.), defensive end Malik Hampton-Prioleau (6-4, 255, SR, Bossier City, La.) and cornerback Tard McCoy (5-9, 184, R-JR, Delray Beach, Fla.) were third teamers.
Broadway indicated that preseason accolades are based on what was accomplished the previous season, which really has no bearing on what will happen this season because there are so many unpredictable occurrences that can happen.
“No one on our schedule cares about what we accomplished last year,” said N.C. A&T Rod Broadway. “We’ve got to get last year out of our system because we’ve got a tough road ahead of us. It is certainly something they can reflect on later in life because we certainly did some special things. But right now we’ve got to start getting ourselves together because everyone else is aware of what we did and they want to do it too.”
