Remembering ECSU’s 1971 CIAA championship football team
Saturday, December 12, 2015

Glen Bowman is a professor of history at ECSU and author of the book Elizabeth City State University, 1891-2016: The Continuity of a Historical Legacy of Excellence and Resilience.

In 1971 ECSU lacked its own campus field and played its home games at Memorial Field, behind Sheep-Harney Elementary School. Although the team did not go undefeated, it gradually played its way into contention and had a chance to win the CIAA on the last game of the season. On a cold and windy Thanksgiving Day at Norfolk’s Foreman Field, ECSU defeated the Rams of Winston-Salem State 33-22, avenging an earlier 13-12 defeat.

Our first and only CIAA Football Championship.  A GREAT memory.  Now it seems we will have to wait even longer to win another one.

I don't doubt the talent of our Student Athletes one bit.  They really do work and play hard with great pride.  However, we are overdue for a CIAA Football Championship and I pray that things are put in place to make it happen sooner rather than later.

With all the divisive rhetoric on social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter, websites such as ours, especially message boards, are under the watchful eye of the Internet giants. And those giants are coming down hard on sites like this one due to the perception of the need for better "oversight".

We recognize the cultural conflict that exists and over the past few months we've been accused of allowing content in posts/threads that supposedly violates some advertiser's policies. Those threads weren’t an issue in the past, but for some reason, they are an issue now. And we are being penalized (financially) because of it.

As a result we are coming to you directly for your financial support>
