www.GoldenTigersSports.com

Golden Tigers are in waiting mode for the postseason until next week

TUSKEGEE, Ala. | For the first time since 1996, the 13th-ranked Tuskegee University Golden Tigers dropped a homecoming game as two fourth quarter touchdowns led Miles to a 26-23 upset victory at Cleve L. Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Tigers took advantage of an early miscue by Miles to score the game's first touchdown just 2:27 in as Kevin Lacey hit Marquel Gardner for a 12-yard score, putting Tuskegee up 7-0.

After a Miles field goal trimmed the lead to 7-3, Tuskegee scored again with 9:25 to play in the half when Lacey hit Gardner for a 10-yard pass to extend the lead to 14-3. The Golden Tigers had a chance at the end of the half to extend the lead but were stopped on a fourth and goal with just 30 seconds remaining.

Tuskegee pushed the lead to 20-3 when Lacey hit a diving Leo Gilbert for a four-yard score with 6:10 remaining in the contest.

That is when Miles made their charge, scoring 23 of the last 26 points of the game to claim the win. The charge started when Jonathan Clark scored from three yards out, followed a blocked punt that resulted in a safety to trim the lead to 20-12.

Kemuel Lawrence pushed the lead to 23-12 with a 39-yard field goal, before Miles scored two touchdowns in the final eight minutes to punch their ticket to the championship game.

Dennis Norfleet led Tuskegee for the second consecutive game rushing as he picked up 97 yards on 15 carries. As a team, the Golden Tigers rushed for 149 yards, while putting up 158 yards through the air.

Gardner led the Golden Tigers with four receptions for 50 yards and the two touchdowns.

Defensively, Jewell Ratliff led the way with 12 tackles – his eighth game in double digit tackles this season – while Julian Morgan finished with 11. The Golden Tigers picked off three Miles (6-4, 6-1 SIAC, 5-0 West) passes – one each from Ratliff, Michael Robinson and Jonah McCutcheon.

Tuskegee (8-2, 7-1 SIAC, 4-1 West) are now in the waiting game, as they wait for the NCAA Regional rankings to be released next week to see if they will be receive a bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs, as Miles advances to the SIAC championship game next week.

Miles 26, Tuskegee 23: Tigers’ SIAC title hopes dashed

Montgomery Advertiser November 7,2015.

TUSKEGEE — As the sun set over Cleve L. Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium, Tuskegee’s SIAC title hopes went down with it.

Miles quarterback David Whipple’s 6-yard touchdown run with 3:11 left completed the 26-23 comeback win over Tuskegee at Abbott Stadium, which clinched the SIAC West Division title for the first time since 2012.

Miles (6-4, 5-0 SIAC West) rushed for 197 yards in the second half and came back from a 23-12 fourth-quarter deficit.

The Bears will face Albany State (6-3), which defeated Fort Valley State 21-17 on Saturday to clinch the SIAC East title, in next Saturday’s SIAC title game at Cramton Bowl.

Tuskegee head coach Willie Slater said his defense stayed on the field too long in the second half.

“We didn’t play particularly well on both sides of the ball,” Slater said. “I don’t know what Miles did differently in the second half. We had a punt blocked and dropped a pass in the end zone. We didn’t do enough to win today.”

The momentum started to shift after Miles blocked a punt by Tuskegee’s Kemuel Lawrence and got a safety to cut the lead to 20-12 with 2:17 left in the third quarter.

Miles running back Jonathan Clark’s second touchdown run — an 11-yard score with 7:57 remaining in the fourth — made it a 23-19 Tuskegee lead.

Whipple finished with 252 total yards—174 on the ground—and three interceptions. Running back Jamarcus Nance had 17 carries for 67 yards. Clark finished with 38 yards on nine carries.

Tuskegee (8-2, 4-1 SIAC West) had a 14-3 lead at halftime, but only converted on 1-of-8 third downs and was held to just 89 total yards in the second half.

Tigers quarterback Kevin Lacey completed 10 of 26 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns, but his final pass fell incomplete on fourth down to end the game.

Wide receiver Marquel Gardner, suspended for last week’s game due to a violation of team rules, caught four passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Travis Hawkins caught two passes for 74 yards. Running back Dennis Norfleet carried the ball 15 times for 92 yards.

The Tigers defense forced four turnovers. Linebacker Jewell Ratliff had 12 tackles and an interception. Defensive end Julian Morgan had 11 tackles and a tackle for loss.

Tuskegee, ranked 13th in Division II, will need some help to reach the NCAA playoffs for the third straight season.

“We had an interesting season,” Slater said. “Our guys did more than even I expected. We were very young up front and in the backfield. Most of those players will be back next year, so I’m interested to see how we respond next season.”

Rare loss: Tuskegee’s loss on Saturday was its second in the last 26 games against SIAC foes. Miles also defeated Tuskegee in 2013 when the Tigers were 8-1.

The loss also ended Tuskegee’s 18-game winning streak on homecoming weekend. Its previous loss was a 21-7 defeat to Alabama A&M in 1997.

Going for No.2: Miles will be looking for its second SIAC football championship next Saturday. Miles won the title by defeating Albany State 20-17 in 2011.

The Rams, in their fourth title game in the last five seasons, will be looking for its 15th title and first since 2013.

That was one of the biggest crowds I had ever seen at homecoming. My guess was in the 40k's. Maybe a few people slid under the fence?

congrats to miles....yall out played and out coached us on sat. i got just one comment , i had been saying our qb play had been suspect all season,, we were winning in spite of his play,,, he will be  a senior next year maybe he can make plays when we need them  even if the play breaks down,,,,  we gotta have a playmaker at the qb position,,,,,the qb from miles is a player,,,, i noticed when he took of on that 45 yard run he was running "country hard" ,,,,come to find out he is from over this way in wilkinson co.  well ,,we have 16 starters returning next season  we will see ......

Yea David Whipple has come a long ways I am proud of how he has took over to lead the team to victory. We have a great Coaching Staff and Recruiting Coordinator who is a TU Graduate and former TU QB in Aaron James.  Coach Ruffin has done an outstanding job with my Golden Bears.  I knew 10 years ago that the Lord was going to send us a Moses of the Gridiron to lead us to the Promise land. From speaking as an Alumni/Staff it is an honor to be a member of his staff these last five years and I'm with him all the way. I've had the chance to work with some good Miles Football Coaches over my 16 years working at Miles from Cecil Leonard,Wade Streeter,Billy Joe,and Reginald Ruffin all these great Coaches has allowed me to tag along with them working on their staffs. And I am most appreciative of that. Tears of joy was lapping my face last Saturday as I sat in the Press Box at Tuskegee as the clock was closing out the game. Because I can remember when we couldn't win anything but look at us now. The SIAC Official who was sitting next to me was like you ok young man as I was wiping tears away. I told him yes I'm fine and he said you love your team and I said yes sir I do. And he said this is what HBCU Spirit is all about when you cry for your team in victory or defeat he told the other SIAC Official that was sitting next to him.
