ST. THOMAS AQUINAS STUNS ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY IN EXHIBITION OPENER, 90-58
Nov 04, 2015

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team shocked Division I St. John's University, 90-58, in the season's exhibition opener at Carnesecca Arena.

St. Thomas Aquinas forced 27 St. John's turnovers, resulting in 32 points and a 48% figure from the field (36-75), as the home squad was held to just 37% (18-49). STAC was also torrid from beyond the arc, shooting 47% (8-for-17) to just 23% (6-26) for SJU. Perhaps most surprisingly, St. Thomas Aquinas won the battle of the boards, outrebounding their Big East opponents by a total of 43-41.

syracuse also loss to a d2 team a couple of years ago.  thing is, when you play any lower division team, your players will not be as motivated to beat the lower division team compared to vice versa.  that’s one of the reasons d1 teams do not play d2 teams on their home court or home field in football, because it gives the d2 team two advantages...

I agree, but to lose by 32 points? I don't think I've ever seen that before from a major program playing a D-II. Even if it was just an exhibition I'd think there has to be some concern from the Johnnies.

Unless they really suck, they should become a better team because of this.

I guess the Aggies weren't motivated

Maybe the teams losing just suck. It seems that Duke and others were motivated.  If the higher ranked teams aren't motivated why don't D1 HBCU'S pull more upsets in Basketball Money games.

If your school ever had the nation's longest losing streak, you can't be considered a football power.

A decent D-II team beating a D-I HBCU a'int that big of a surprise. Most of us are basically playing with D-II level talent anyways.  I doubt if motivation was an issue for our first exhibition game. Perhaps Phifer is a better team? I guess we'll see very soon.
